Thrilled to have joined the panel on "From Lab to Market: Development & Monetisation of Innovative Tech Projects" at the Sharjah Research, Technology and Innovation Park (SRTI Park)'s Innovation Technology Transfer Forum. As a speaker, I delved into a subject I am deeply passionate about, bridging the gap between academia and industry through tech transfer and commercialization strategies. Drawing from my experience as the former CEO of the UAEU Science and Innovation Park and the Executive Director of the UAEU Pavilion at Expo 2020, I shared insights on nurturing innovation ecosystems and transforming intellectual property into market-ready solutions. It was an enriching discussion on how we can empower academics and entrepreneurs to transition from ideation to impactful solutions. The "University of the Future" concept, which I pioneered, focuses on creating job creators instead of job seekers. This concept aligns perfectly with the forum's objective to highlight the journey of technology from the lab to the marketplace, emphasizing the crucial role of education in fostering entrepreneurial mindsets. Key takeaways from the forum included the importance of collaborative platforms for open innovation and the need for conducive environments for partnerships. Such ecosystems can significantly accelerate the journey of innovative projects from labs to the hands of consumers and industries. I look forward to continuing these conversations and contributing further to this dynamic field. Building upon my reflections on the 2030 Startuplab 2030 Cleantech Summit at Oslo Innovation Week, I had the privilege of observing numerous startup founders pitch their ideas in under 2 minutes to an audience of like-minded individuals and investors. The high-stress environment exposed me to the dynamics of presenting innovative ideas to potential backers. As someone who thrives on learning through observation and action, this experience proved to be exceptionally valuable. Drawing from my past engagements in pitching competitions under a startup in Singapore, this summit further enriched my understanding of effectively articulating ideas to investors. From observing these pitches, this was my main takeaway: 💡 Passion is a potent communicator. Personally, the pitches that resonated most profoundly with me were those where founders authentically conveyed their passion, particularly within a community deeply committed to cleantech. Furthermore, a panel discussion held challenged the conventional notion of capturing a startup's target country before expanding internationally. Insights shared emphasised the significance of engaging international investors early on for greater exposure, a strategy deemed beneficial for long-term company growth. While acknowledging potential variations across industries beyond the clean tech space, this perspective offers a compelling food for thought.
