Alongside leading LGBTQ+ organizations, the Lowenstein Center for the Public Interest challenged Florida's ban on gender-affirming health care for transgender youth and restrictions on such care for adults in the landmark case, Doe v. Ladapo. At trial in December 2023, Lowenstein lawyers argued that Florida’s law and rules are unconstitutional because they are grounded in intentional discrimination against transgender people. A decision in the case is imminent. Chapter 2: The Paradox of Altruism: When Helping Hurts Altruism is a powerful motivator, driving countless individuals to seek employment in nonprofit organizations. Fueled by a desire to make a meaningful difference, they eagerly trade potentially higher salaries and more comfortable work conditions for the intangible rewards of impacting lives and communities. However, the altruistic drive that beckons us toward nonprofit work can also serve as a vulnerability, exploited by organizations that fail to maintain equitable and fair work environments. This chapter peels back the layers of this paradox, exploring how the altruistic spirit can be both an asset and a liability in the complex ecosystem of nonprofit work. Emotional Blackmail Nonprofits often have missions that stir the soul, tapping into our innate desire to make a difference. However, these noble goals can sometimes be used as emotional leverage to make employees overlook inequities or injustices within the organization itself. Kendra’s supervisor's response, "We all make sacrifices for the cause," is a classic example of using the mission as a smokescreen to justify unfair practices.
