2nd post of reflections on an amazing trip to the US-affiliated Pacific Islands (USAPIs) where Community Health Centers (CHCs) serve 1 in 5. Please learn more and support the PACIFIC ISLANDS PRIMARY CARE ASSOCIATION (PIPCA) and their committed and collaborative CEO Arielle Buyum at: https://lnkd.in/g4h_9FSJ. Reflecting with gratitude earlier this month when Arielle Buyum, Gracy Trinoskey-Rice, National Association of Community Health Centers (NACHC) summer intern Sofia Leaf, and I were in Saipan in the lovely capital of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI). Together, we visited and had dinner with the wonderful team at Isla Community Health (formerly known as Kagman Community Health Center). Since 2013, they have been committed to the mission of “improving people’s health and well-being by providing affordable, accessible, and quality comprehensive healthcare” to the people of CNMI through 3 separate locations with 2 on the island of Saipan and 1 on the island of Tinian. They are also an NCQA certified patient-centered medical home (PCMH). Their services include and are not limited to comprehensive primary care, integrated mental health and substance abuse services, urgent care, an IV infusion program, prenatal care, outreach and eligibility services, laboratory services, case management, and even transportation services. Nearly 1 in 5 are limited English proficient (LEP) and best served by Native Chamorro or Native Carolinian. 100% of their patients are below 200% of the poverty level and impacted by social drivers that go “beyond the exam room.” Please learn more and support them at: https://kagmanchc.org/. With Saipan being only 12 miles long and 6 miles wide, we were fortunate to experience some of their beautiful sights and monuments from Bird Island and the Grotto to Suicide and Banzai Cliffs. NACHC believes that CHCs like Isla Community Health and PCAs like the PIPCA are the best, most innovative, most resilient, and most diverse part of our health system. We stand united with CHCs and PCAs for and with the people we have served and will serve as “the best is yet to come.” Please learn more and support the CHC movement at: https://www.nachc.org. #HealthCenters #ValueCHCs #FundCHCs #WeAreNACHC

Another reason that HRSA should have ten times the current annual spending level, and likely the only way to double basic health access where it is half enough for most Americans.

It's heartening to see the impact they're making in improving healthcare access and support for the community, especially for those facing significant challenges. Kyu Rhee, MD, MPP
