HR in action: The case of Costco James Sinegal, former CEO of Costco, is quoted as saying, " When employees are happy, they are your very best ambassadors," and the fact that he made a modest salary as CEO, are among the reasons why Sinegal was named one of the 100 Most Influential People in Business Ethics in 2008. Although Costco pays considerably more than the industry average, including bonuses and other incentives, it's revenues and stock price continue to grow. In fact, the value of Costco stock from 1985 until Sinegal's retirement in 2012 increased by 5000%. Then next CEO, Craig Jelinek, continued this trend. In 2015, Costco's stock rose more than 15% under his leadership, and he was named CEO of the year by CNN. Costco's stock price has continued to be strong in subsequent years. There's a lesson here for all the business leaders frantically looking for the next big thing, and all the companies eager to attract a hot new outsider who can solve all their problems or take their business to new heights. The lesson is this: Sometimes running the same company with the same team for years or even decades can be a very powerful thing.

This is Bob Rosenberg, Dunkin Donuts' visionary founder. For decades, Dunkin Donuts was THE sit-down donut shop, owning the East Coast. But as the landscape changed in the 50s and 60s... with people cozying up with at-home coffee ☕ and eating out at diners less, Dunkin's charm fizzled out. Here is where Rosenberg had to take a massive, bet-the-farm risk. He dared to pivot the brand entirely. First, a seemingly small step: swapping porcelain cups for paper ones. A subtle nudge to customers: "You're on the go!" Then, launching new no-seat, no-dining-room stores. A drastic shift, but exactly what the 'on-the-go' era demanded. Many saw it as a gamble. Especially when, in the coffee biz, the joke is the cup often costs more than the coffee itself! But Bob wasn’t thinking of the now, he envisioned the future - a mobile, fast-paced world. Similarly, at Protein Bar, my origin was protein shakes. But instead of pushing harder against changing consumer trends, I took a page from Bob's playbook: "Give people what they want" It’s tempting to make people want what we have. But genuine success? That's about listening, adapting, and serving exactly what they're looking for. The essence? Sometimes the boldest business decisions stem from simply tuning into what the world around us is truly asking for. Seems simple, right? It is. Big news for retail giant Dollar General, who has announced the immediate return of former CEO Todd Vasos to help refocus the company's strategic direction and regain stability and confidence in the brand. Vasos, who previously served as CEO from 2015 to 2022, has agreed to return from retirement to lead the company which operates nearly 20,000 stores across the US and Mexico and is No. 16 on Progressive Grocer's 2023 list of top retailers. During his previous tenure, Vasos helped accelerate growth and innovation, expanding the company's footprint by approximately 7,000 stores and increasing annual sales revenue by more than 80%.
