🌑 The Space Bricks Have Landed! 🌑 Inspired by LEGO, European Space Agency - ESA scientists have used dust from a meteorite to 3D-print 'space bricks' to test these ideas. These space bricks are on display in selected #LEGO stores from 20 June to 20 September, aiming to inspire the next generation of space engineers. Full story 👉 https://lnkd.in/evw-YKEw The concept is simple yet revolutionary: instead of transporting building materials to the Moon, we could use lunar regolith to construct a base. ESA scientists tackled the challenge of limited lunar regolith on Earth by grinding up a 4.5-billion-year-old meteorite to create their own version. This dust was then used to 3D-print LEGO-style space bricks. The beauty of these space bricks lies in their flexibility and modularity, similar to regular LEGO bricks but in a stylish space grey. This allows scientists to build and test various structures, fostering creativity and innovation. As ESA Science Officer Aidan Cowley stated, "It was both fun and useful in scientifically understanding the boundaries of these techniques." This initiative not only advances scientific research but also aims to inspire young minds. Emmet Fletcher, Head of ESA's Branding and Partnerships Office, emphasized, "ESA's space bricks are a great way to show young people how play and the power of imagination play a crucial role in space science." As industrial applications of additive manufacturing continue to rise, it's fascinating to see such creative, out-of-the-box uses. If ESA is interested, we can explore how the International Additive Manufacturing Qualification System (IAMQS) can support training the future space workforce in utilizing these technologies. Today we offer a behind-the-scenes look at our Exhibition Design & Production for 'Mission: Astronaut', premiering in February 2024. 1️⃣ Build Drawings Finalized! 🔍 Production is about to take off! Our Project Manager, Carli is reviewing these crucial drawings to ensure everything is built as needed. It's where the magic begins. 2️⃣ Cooking in Space 🍽️ One section of 'Mission: Astronaut' highlights the daily routines of astronauts in space. Realistic food is integral to 'Cooking in Space', an interactive that allows visitors to prepare a meal by rehydrating and warming their 'space food', just like astronauts do. Stephanie, who is one of our Exhibition Developers, is working hard to expertly package this simulated space cuisine into vacuum-sealed pouches. These packages replicate the look of NASA's astronaut provisions. 3️⃣ Designing for Exploration 🌱 Kairah, our Graphic Designer, is hard at work, designing elements of the 'Growing Plants' interactive, where visitors will learn how greenery thrives in the cosmos! 🌿 4️⃣ Technology for Space Exploration 👨🚀 'Mission: Astronaut' explores the engineering and technology that support space exploration and ensures the safety of astronauts during their missions. I think I just blew this girl's mind. It's take your kiddo to work day and we're getting a little presentation on all the satellites my division has built. One girl... 14? 15? Was asking a ton of great questions... enough so that the presenter was like, "you should work here someday!" She replies: "I want to be an artist" ...at which point I chimed in and said, "You can do art and work in this industry! All these posters and visual information we use to communicate? That you're looking at right now? They were all created by artists." The look on her face was priceless as a world of opportunity just opened up... I've said it before and I'll say it again... whatever you're passionate about can be applied to space exploration and the aerospace industry.
