We love seeing progress in our beloved retail industry. As we have discussed on many of our events in 2023, female leaders adopt a considerably different leadership style. They not only focus on the success of the organisation both short-term and long-term, but also ensure that their teams are inspired, empowered and have many opportunities to grow and innovate. On top of that, female leaders look beyond their companies into the impact they make on the world, planet and even how we shape what people think, believe in and how we therefore raise our children. All brands have the power to change the world for the better and many have their purpose tied into bettering people’s lives, the state of Mother Earth and other social and environmental causes. However, it takes compassionate, kind and embracing leaders to put that purpose into action and make it into a profitable business. We love the article in Retail Gazette celebrating that in 2022 31% of all CEO placements in UK retail brands were women (and they are thriving in these positions). Women are losing out to men when it comes to the top CEO positions among retailers. Only six new retail CEOs in a 2022/23 Korn Ferry study were women, clocking in at 15 percent. And even more troubling, half the companies with a previous female CEO replaced her with a man for a net loss of six female retail CEOs in the year. The study started with 31 percent of the 39 outgoing CEOs as women; it ended with 15 percent, with John B. R. It has been a rollercoaster of a few weeks. Outside of many personal challenges, I have been analysing the results of our recent research, writing our new report and planning the launch event that happened this Tuesday 16th April. The level of stress, pressure (mostly self-created as I am so passionate about our cause) plus what cards live dealt me within the last few weeks and months, meant that I had to come to terms with a vast sea of emotions that came after our launch event. As our research showed 81% of women (we didn't have enough men filling in the survey to include them) believe there aren't enough women in senior leadership positions in retail and 58% feel their career progression has been restricted. We asked what are the reasons for it, how can we solve it, what challenges female leaders face and even how we perceive leaders (gender-neutral) compared to female andmale leaders. The results weren't shocking as our brilliant panel of speakers said, but it didn't stop them from offering incredible inspiration, personal experiences and solutions they believe can help. Soooo....when will the fashion industry mirror its primary audience in its leadership choices? Why are women so overlooked for the top creative director roles? 👀 Another headline this morning that highlights an interesting pattern: the direction of female-focused brands often landing in the hands of male creative directors. Notable talents and surely worthy, but undoubtedly - but it sparks an important question. While merit is not the debate – the expertise and capability are there for the men appointed to these roles – I still can't help but wonder why, in an industry so rooted in female narratives, the opportunity to elevate women to these pivotal roles often seems completely missed. Take Sarah Burton for example – the previous creative director for Alexander McQueen was expected to be opening the door, not shutting it with a male as her successor, leading to almost all masculine leadership team at the LVMH portfolio brands. Not to mention most of these hires seem to be coming from outside the organization instead of lifting up those who have been behind the scenes, making the magic come together for years. 🚺💭 It's about more than representation; it's about understanding the nuances, the subtleties that only come from lived experience. We're in an era where lifting women in leadership roles, especially in female-centric brands, isn't just good optics - it's smart business. 💼🌟 In an era championing women's voices, surely there's room at the top for more female leadership.
