Warm congratulations to my friend and esteemed former long-standing collaborator and NIH colleague, Prof. Paul M Yen, MD, FACP for winning the 1st Place 2023 SingHealth Duke-NUS Research Award. Also, kudos to the co-awardees: Prof. Pierce Chow Kah-Hoe, Asst. Prof. Brijesh Kumar Singh, and Dr. Madhulika Tripathi. The award was bestowed upon Paul and his team today for their highly innovative project titled: “Vitamin B12 and folate decrease inflammation and fibrosis in NASH”. Paul stands 2nd from the left in the commemorative picture below. Paul's team discovered the fundamental involvement of STX17 degradation in the progression of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) through a block in autophagy and the reversal of this process (with restoration/ rescue of STX17 expression levels) by vitB12 and folate therapy (full details of the fascinating MOA in their paper published in J Hepatol. 📣 We are thrilled to announce our participation in the leading Spanish Hepatology Congress, by Asociación Española del Estudio del Hígado, where we have presented an original scientific poster.  🆕 This new research is the result of our R&D team, focused on developing an improved culture model using human precision-cut liver slices (hPCLS) to investigate the phenotype and functionality of the hepatic sinusoid in the context of chronic liver disease. By using our patent-protected chip with microfluidics, we are able to culture hPCLS with: ✔ Extended half-life, up to 7 days. ✔ Enhanced structural and functional integrity of the tissue. ✔ Prevention of the loss of the sinusoidal cell phenotype. Wake Forest University School of Medicine Dr. David Caudell, DVM's research hits new heights with two recent high-impact publications! First, published in #PNAS [https://lnkd.in/gTW3pp23] demonstrates the activity of fibroblast stimulating lipopeptide (FSL-1) as a countermeasure agent against hematopoietic acute radiation syndrome. #hematopoiesis, #innateimmunity, #radiation And, the second most recent paper made the cover of the #JLB (Journal of Leukocyte Biology)! The work establishes the #CD40 agonist selicrelumab as safe and effective at stimulating a systemic immune response when administered via subcutaneous injection, supporting its use in humans. #immunotherapy In the words of our colleague Dr. Mark Cline, DVM: "The paper represents an enormous collaborative effort with an international team, encompassing a decade of hard work and detailed exploration of unexpected findings (the best kind of results!)."
