No way is this a one minute read.
But for leaders contemplating their teams' engagement and impact it's worth the five minutes it took me, and perhaps another half an hour to contemplate what you might do about some of the risk and protective factors that are in play within your organisation.
Some great insights on drivers of positive and negative outcomes, the role of the workplace in driving wellbeing, engagement and performance, and the value (and challenge) of systemic interventions - while burnout is experienced by individuals, organisational dynamics are in the driver's seat.
I love the line that as an employer "...you can’t “yoga” your way out of these challenges."
Blessedly bereft of silver bullets, but some excellent, searching prompts towards the tail end of the article: e.g. employee mental health and wellbeing as a strategic priority, addressing various behaviours known to drive negative outcomes, support for individual growth, role design and sustainability, leadership accountability, and so on.
The responses will look very different across government departments, smaller public agencies, larger non-profits etc but they're worth feeding into conversations about strategy, operating models and the ways your teams work together - especially if trimming FTE and staffing costs is your current preoccupation. Even small changes offer so much opportunity for improved engagement, performance and impact.
