I hopped onto a Chartered Insurance Institute webinar hosted by Alan Chandler today. Alan was talking about Hilda Ogden Tables and how they are making compensation claims expensive. Alan really knows his stuff so it was an hour well spent. Thing is, though, compensation awards have been shooting up well above inflation rates for years. This memo's from 1972 and it's funny because £77k is basically just the cost of a Tesla running into the back of another Tesla now, but adjusted for inflation that 1972 claim would be worth over a million quid. That's ignoring Ogden shenanigans. More interestingly, the £250k indemnity limit being proposed equates to around four million quid in today's money. And yet £2m is still not uncommon; in fact, some insurers are still quoting £1m as the entry rate indemnity limit.
