The Reuters Institute Digital News Report is out today, which is always a key reference for me - https://lnkd.in/ek7APDHw It suggests more people are turning away from news because they're finding it depressing, relentless and boring, highlighting the role politics and politicians are playing in dragging it down. Interest in news has almost halved since 2015 in the UK. Lots of people say they feel increasingly overwhelmed and confused by the amount of news, and tired of how much focuses on politics. Women and younger people in particular say they feel worn out by it. Trust in the news is still lower than it was at the height of the pandemic. It improved slightly in the UK over the past year, but remains 15% lower than before the Brexit referendum 8 years ago. The BBC remains the most trusted news brand in the UK. Which is timely news, because you can get an insight behind the scenes at the BBC by joining our lunchtime event on Thursday next week, where we'll host by Julia Caesar, Senior Global Broadcast Editor at the BBC, to explore how businesses can leverage the power of broadcast news. 📰🗞️ NewsPaper wala AMIT KUMAR GUPTA Top Trending News Flash: September 2020 September 2020 was a whirlwind of events, with one topic dominating the global discourse: the COVID-19 pandemic. Nations worldwide grappled with spikes or decreases in cases, prompting alterations in lockdown measures, travel restrictions, and quarantine protocols. The passing of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg sent shockwaves across the nation, marking the end of an era. Her death ignited a fierce political battle over her successor, with ramifications for the upcoming U.S. Presidential elections in November. In the world of technology, TikTok, the short-form video app, remained in the limelight. The U.S. government threatened to ban the app, citing concerns over data security and potential ties to the Chinese government, leading to discussions about a potential acquisition by American companies. Wildfires continued to rage across the U.S. West Coast, primarily in California, Oregon, and Washington. These devastating fires displaced thousands, wreaked havoc on ecosystems, and underscored the growing concern about climate change and its real-world impacts. Internationally, the tensions between India and China escalated at the border, raising alarms about potential military confrontations between the two nuclear-armed nations. In all, September 2020 served as a testament to the unpredictable and tumultuous nature of the year.

It was a great experience to be in the news biz back in the day. But this latest report out of the U.S. makes it clear those days are gone forever: One-Third of US Newspapers As of 2005 Will Be Gone by 2024 The decline of local newspapers accelerated so rapidly in 2023 that analysts now believe the U.S. will have lost one-third of the newspapers it had as of 2005 by the end of next year—rather than in 2025, as originally predicted. (Axios) An average of 2.5 newspapers closed each week in 2023 compared to two a week the previous year, a reflection of an ever-worsening advertising climate, according to a Northwestern University study issued Thursday. Most are weekly publications, in areas with few or no other sources for news. (AP) The researchers found that since 2005, the U.S. has lost nearly 2,900 newspapers and 43,000 journalists. (Poynter)

Headlines can be intentionally misleading. And shocking. With an obvious intent to mislead. And it is sad that our American news networks have become lobbyists instead of objective journalists. “Half say US support for Ukraine should have time limit”. Shocking. Until you read the fine print. That’s down….from 51%….to 50%, since February 2023. A 1% change. With a 5% margin of error. Meaning- there is no story here. It’s a headline with no story. It’s sad to say FOX news has gone anti-Ukraine. FOX is not objective. Not trying to tell you the truth. It’s become an opinion network and supporting extreme views against supporting Ukraine- and trying to sell them as mainstream. I used to appear on FOX all the time to discuss Iraq and Afghanistan. I’ve been involved in Ukraine for 17 months. And they haven’t allowed me on once. Not for lack of trying. CNN and Erin Burnett has had me on many times. Congress is fully supportive of Ukraine in a non-partisan support. Don’t believe FOX when it gives the appearance that a certain party is unanimously against supporting Ukraine. It’s as misleading as this headline news story they are “peddling”. The very question in the title of the article is misleading, leading the witness. What country should the US support with no timeline? The shocking story shoujd be 50% of Americans support funding Ukraine indefinitely. That’s really supportive. That means 50% of Americans believe in defending Europe against Russian aggression- until victory. As we should. Fox News Poll: Half say US support for Ukraine should have time limit https://lnkd.in/eG6yF-k6 Explore the Fox News apps that are right for you at https://lnkd.in/eDgn5WNv.

A no surprises here survey. Paying for misinformation is not on my preference list. A personal current observation of reporting bias in the NZ media is the continuation of a very left wing bias in reporting the new governments nature, goals and methodologies in its policy and decision making. RNZ has inordinate access to the leader of the opposition, who seems almost to be a permanent panel member of any discussion forum. The bias is measured independently of course and reflects the personal anecdote https://mediabias.co.nz/ Europe is due for a political reset this year according to several sources https://lnkd.in/geQnBr82 with maybe the exception of the UK. https://lnkd.in/gU7T7uPa

Great chart from the Financial Times on trust in media across the UK and US. Some key take outs: - Most UK news sources have roughly equal trust across supporters of both major parties. The opposite is true in the US. - The BBC plays an important stabilising role in the UK. It has bipartisan trust and is widely consumed - 60% of Brits use it regularly. The US has no equivalent unifying news source. - The FT is the UK’s most trusted news source and least partisan. - The UK newspapers with the highest sales have very low trust (Sun, Daily Mail). While some of the difference between the UK and US will be driven by the media being more partisan in the US, it is notable that the same news sources can be interpreted very differently in each country – see BBC, Economist, Reuters. This suggests that those in the US have come to perceive sources as partisan even where that may not be the case. Regardless, the implications for US society are not good and with media consumption highly fragmented into political camps it is a very difficult problem to address. In the case of the UK, the entrance of outlets like GB News perhaps leads to the impression that our media is becoming more polarised than it is in reality. This conclusion was also reached by a 2022 study from the University of Oxford and Reuters Institute (link in the comments). Interested to hear other views. #trust #polarisation

Whatever we think about the media, they play an important role. They hold the powerful to account often providing the vulnerable with a voice. In a functioning democracy you need that pillar. But the times are changing and the way we both gather and distribute our news is changing. So on the first point there is need for a strong media sector in a functioning democracy such as ours and what is happening at both Newshub and TVNZ is disturbing to watch also because of the loss of so many jobs but also the picture of a sector in flux. A survey out the other day painted a picture of the decline in trust with the public and also the fact that people are reaching out to other platforms for their news. We have seen the cross over of people from casual observers to commentators to expert analysts and this blurs the line of reporting into views and opinions. None of this should detract from the fundamental question which is it all worth saving? The simple answer is yes but in what form is the real question? It must be the case that we have a strong fourth estate in a functioning democracy to cut through the noise and chaos. To b honest sometime it feels more like newstsinmrnt than news of opinion versus fact and I think many people feel the newsmakers are the news people themselves. Again that shouldn’t detract from what is needed. I fundamentally agree with Patrick Gower As the GM of a news network I continue to Observe with great interest.
