Funniest nature campaign video I have seen this year: Frog off open-net salmon farms! First of all. Until 3 years ago, my favorite food was salmon avocado sushi. So I get it. Sushi is yummy. But it's not worth it, so I stopped. 🇨🇦 What happened? Canada's government just gave companies that operate open-net pens 5 year extensions on their licenses. 🐟 Why does it matter? Open-net pen salmon farms are destroying ecosystems on land & water. 🎣 What are open-net salmon farms? Large cages or nets placed in coastal waters to raise salmon. 🐸 Why should they be removed? Impact on Indigenous communities: Traditional harvesting areas are being contaminated, affecting the livelihoods and food sources of Indigenous peoples. Pollution: These farms release unfiltered waste directly into the ocean, altering the chemical balance & harming marine life. Diseases: High-density farming conditions boost diseases & parasites, which then spread to wild salmon, increasing their mortality rates. Blockage: They are right on the migration route & provide an additional danger for the wild salmon. Dependency: Killer whales, wolves, bears, eagles and ancient forests. All of them depend on the wild salmon run. No salmon = devestating impact on these species & ecosystems. Salmon food: Mainly consists of fish meal, depleting forage fish populations worldwide, with some areas in British Columbia seeing up to a 99% decline. 💪 3 Things you can do about it: # 1 Policy: Advocate for policies that transition away from salmon farming. You can sign the letter from Pacific Wild below. Maybe leave a couple of bucks too, so they can continue their inspiring work. # 2 Opt-out: If we don't eat salmon, we don't have those farms. So step by step make your way to cucumber maki. # 3 Share: This is not an exclusive Canadian issue & might happening in front of your door. Raise awareness about the harmful impacts of fish farms. So what's left to say? Vote with your plate, signature & donations. & frog off open-net salmon farms! P.S. What do you think about the video? Too vulgar or spot on? #biodiversity #nature #fish Video Credit: Pacific Wild Thank you, Tom Brand, for bringing it to my attention!
It's such a good video 😂
This has recently run into some headwinds: https://dailyhive.com/canada/first-nations-william-shatner-ryan-reynolds-apologize-video
Like most things in life there will never be 100% support on either side of this issue but the salmon farming industry in BC provides a substantial economic impact to coastal communities and is generally supported by the local First Nations. Decisions on open pen farming licenses should be made considering real data on the environmental and economic impact to local/regional communities (both human and wildlife) and with the input of these stakeholders.
This is largely a business owned or co-owned by First Nation communities along the coast who really don’t have many economic opportunities. This commercial is colonial finger wagging at its worst and the AFN has rightfully called for an apology.
Wow! Didn't know all of that! Thanks for sharing! It's like keeping a lion in a small cave. These animals need space
Genius!! We can't be Canadian any longer 😂 That should become a world wide climate activist slogan.
Great ad for an important cause! Hopefully something happens as a result of this
F*** off you salmon farmers and all of you oil makers and big polluters !!
These farms are not just a Canadian problem, they are in many places in the world. BUT, is this an essential industry? fulfilling and essential need?
