With pleasure, I hereby present our latest publication on a New Surgical Landmark for the identification of the Transverse-Sigmoid-Sinus-Transition, published in Brain and Spine. https://lnkd.in/djVQz-wK The transverse-sigmoid-sinus-transition constitutes an important anatomical landmark during a retrosigmoid craniotomy. Due to its anatomical variations, the location is highly variable. Landmarks for identification of the anterior border of the sigmoid sinus have been described extensively, although there is a paucity of landmarks for the identification of the posterior border. By means of a retrospective analysis of cerebral MRI examinations of one-hundred patients, we examined the relationship between the transverse-sigmoid-sinus-transition (TSST) and the most-posterior-part-of-the-auricula (MPPA). The most-posterior-part-of-the-auricula can be considered a fast and practical new anatomical landmark, without affecting operative fluency, especially during an emergency craniotomy. On Monday 16 October, we will be delighted to welcome Olujimi Ajijola, Associate Director of UCLA Cardiac Arrhythmia Center & EP Programs and Associate Professor of Medicine—Cardiology at the University of California, Davis, to deliver the 2023 Burdon Sanderson Prize Lecture 'Realizing The Promise of Cardiac Neuromodulation: Clinical & Laboratory Insights Paving the Path': The autonomic nervous system is central to homeostatic regulation of the heart across physiological states. In the setting of chronic cardiac injury, initially protective adaptive mechanisms orchestrated by the autonomic nervous system become deleterious. Structural and functional remodelling of neuronal and non-neuronal elements comprising reflex heart-brain circuits promote maladaptive processes that worsen cardiac function and enhance arrhythmias. Employing approaches ranging from in silico to mechanistic clinical studies, our work elucidates mechanisms governing adverse neural remodelling and develops interventions targeting nexus points within heart-brain reflex circuits to treat chronic heart disease. Walking involves a complex interplay of signals between the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves. A spinal cord injury severs the connection between brain and limbs, making it challenging or impossible to initiate and coordinate the movements required for walking. This groundbreaking result of being able to walk lies not only in the tools and tech but in the synergy between human adaptability, technological innovation, surgical skill and access to consistent rehabilitation. As the humanity develops the exciting realm of technology-assisted rehabilitation, I look forward to more transformative possibilities for patients in the realm of rehabilitation.

Last week, Dr. Allen Ho, MD, FACS, FASRS, Co-Director of the Wills Eye Retina Service and Director of Retina Research gave the 46th Annual E. B. Spaeth Oration at the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. The oration, entitled Science, Serendipity and Listening to the Patient, centered around the idea that patients are doing better, particularly when considering the global prevalence of significant ophthalmic disease such as age related macular degeneration, glaucoma and cataract. An innovation ecosystem based on scientific discovery and translational research drives progress but luck and timing are perhaps as important. Our patients tell us that our work is not done, listening to their stories can help us improve and enrich our journey with them. The mission of the Spaeth Oration is to preserve Edmund B. 💡 ❤️ Happy to share that our paper on 3D left atrial motion estimation and strain measurement from 4D CT imaging was published last week in Frontiers Cardiovascular Medicine. In this study, we developed a pipeline to measure regional left atrial strain from 4D CT, and compared strains in cardiac resynchronisation therapy patients with and without atrial fibrillation. 🔬 We found that patients with AF had reduced and more dyssynchronous 3D left atrial motion and strain. Great to see this research for EB Simplex, which shares many similarities with EI. Both conditions are caused by mutations in the Keratin genes, and both manifest with skin fragility and blistering. Research for EBS will benefit EI, and EI research has the potential to help those with EBS.
