🔬 We're proud to share our latest manuscript comparing the effectiveness of aquablation and holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP) for treating lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) due to benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH). 📊 Our prospective cohort study included 40 patients who chose either aquablation or HoLEP between June 2020 and April 2022. We meticulously analyzed outcomes including prostate volume, uroflowmetry, and quality of life indices over 12 months. 🕒 Findings revealed that while both treatments significantly improved LUTS, HoLEP was superior in operation time and had a better safety profile. However, aquablation showed early benefits in ejaculatory and continence functions at the three-month mark. 🧐 This study provides valuable insights into the surgical options for LUTS. A must-read for healthcare professionals involved in urological care! 🔗 https://lnkd.in/exRyEGHP #Urology #SurgicalInnovation #ProstateHealth #BPH #MedicalResearch #Healthcare #HoLEP #Aquablation Feel free to share and comment! | EVMS a Division of Vertice Enriching Lives Through Innovative MedTech | Vertice hits media again with its latest medical achievement at Life Rosepark Hospital, Bloemfontein. The hospital performed its first Holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP) procedure (a first in the Free State), revolutionising the treatment of urinary obstruction caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men. Thanks to this cutting-edge MedTech solution, patients can now experience a better quality of life, free from the frustrating and uncomfortable symptoms caused by an enlarged prostate. One of the most significant advantages of this laser prostatectomy is that it allows for more tissue to be removed with minimal blood loss and is performed endoscopically, without any incision. As result, patients can bid farewell to prolonged hospital stays, as they can have their urinary catheters removed earlier and be discharged sooner. We salute the team of medical personnel at Life Rosepark Hospital for their commitment to embracing innovation and pushing the boundaries of medical excellence. Our urology team is the first in the East of England and only the fourth NHS hospital trust nationwide to offer a new image-guided robotic treatment to men with enlarged prostates. NNUH urologists joined their counterparts at Guy’s and St Thomas’, the Royal Berkshire and Basingstoke and North Hampshire NHS Trusts in providing Aquablation to men with enlarged prostates who meet the criteria. Aquablation is a robotic procedure that uses a high-pressure saline solution to remove tissue from an enlarged prostate. It has been shown in multiple trials to have fewer side effects including preserving sexual function, than the more common TURP (Transurethral Resection of the Prostate) procedure that involves cutting away the section of the prostate using heat. It has reduced operating time and length of stay. It can be up to 45% faster to carry out the procedure (30-40 minutes compared with 70-80 minutes for the TURP procedure) and some patients go home the same day or stay just one night. Most men have the catheter removed the next day, which improves patient experience and helps bed capacity. Read more on our website: https://lnkd.in/eHtF5edq

𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻 𝗖𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿® 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗺® 💡 In Paper V of VIII from my thesis published in March 2002, the debut of the Schelin Catheter® marked a transformative moment in prostate treatments. The study delved into the outcomes of the first 15 patients who underwent CoreTherm® (PLFT®) using this catheter for sterile transurethral injections with a local anesthetic solution, significantly elevating patient comfort. 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲'𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵: • Sterile injections of 0.5% Mepivacain with Adrenaline at strategic prostate locations 🎯 • An 80% reduction in the need for post-treatment analgesics 💊 • Halving of the treatment time ⏱ • A 50% drop in calculated intraprostatic blood flow, thanks to adrenaline's vasoconstrictive effect 🩸 • 62% less total microwave energy required 🔋 • A 35% reduction in prostate volume after 3 months, outperforming the 29% in the non-local anesthesia group 📉 The introduction of sterile injections via the Schelin Catheter® and the targeted use of adrenaline not only maximized patient comfort but also significantly enhanced treatment efficacy by managing blood flow.
