Can we fight the climate crisis with technology? In 2023, the tech world started to redefine innovation with a crucial focus on sustainability. No longer just a buzzword, sustainability is now an urgent necessity for our planet's well-being. The European Union is leading the charge, envisioning a "twin transition" that marries the digital revolution with a green transformation, as stated in the European Green Deal. But it's not just about balancing the scales – it's about embedding sustainability directly into the digital transformation process itself. Digital technologies currently account for 8 to 10 percent of the EU's energy consumption and emit 2 to 4 percent of greenhouse emissions. It's a significant impact that can either be the greatest opportunity for sustainability or the biggest risk, as highlighted by David Jensen from the UN Environment Programme. #Sustainability: It's More Than Just a Fancy Word After #AI I want to speak about about a word we hear a lot these days: #sustainability. It's everywhere, right? But sometimes companies use this word without really meaning it. We often see 'greenwashing', making things look eco-friendly when they're not really changing much or anything at all. But real sustainability? That's a whole different ballgame. It's not just about being kind and protecting the planet. It's also about looking after people to keep them #healthy and making sure companies can generate #profit and keep doing business, both now and in the future.
