The April Jobs Report showed that the labor force participation rate for women ages 25 to 54 hit an all-time high. We can and should celebrate the fact that women are reclaiming workforce progress that was lost during the pandemic, but we cannot ignore that many working moms, particularly single mothers, still face significant challenges. Addressing these challenges is among the reasons I am so passionate about flexible, nontraditional ways of working and breaking down barriers to employment.

In the first quarter, Team Kelly continued to make progress on our journey to accelerate profitable growth, increasing the company’s adjusted EBITDA margin to 3.2% – a significant year-over-year improvement of 110 basis points and well above our recent average. Second chance hiring and efforts to remove barriers to employment for neurodiverse job seekers are gaining traction because employers recognize it’s not just the right thing to do, it’s good business. April is both Second Chances and Autism Awareness month, and a reminder that many qualified job seekers in the U.S. don’t have equitable access to meaningful work. I recently addressed this topic at MIT Sloan School of Management, where I joined Checkr, Inc. Thank you to the Executive Council Network (ECN) for inviting me to discuss how leaders can craft pathways to serve on boards. I enjoyed this conversation with Wendy Howell and 🎉 Jennifer S. Ives about the importance of building boards with diverse points of view and putting leaders of various backgrounds in positions to serve.

Despite signs of softening, today’s Jobs Report shows that the labor market remains resilient. At the same time, working Americans continue to feel insecure about the economy and the jobs market.   So, what’s the takeaway?   The numbers don’t tell the full story and we must be careful to draw conclusive takeaways. Rather, let’s look at specific developments. Here are three that caught my attention recently thanks to research from the The Burning Glass Institute, the Strada Education Foundation, Harvard Business School, and others.
