What do you do to get you ready for an important meeting, a presentation, an evaluation, etc? I use "walk up music" (baseball players use it to walk up to bat) but I call it "Cheer music." It's any music with motivational/inspirational lyrics to put me in the right frame of mind. I put it on a continuous loop to get my mind in the right place. Shared internally, but I thought it would be good to share here too. How does professional drum improv relate to our everyday work? This is a fun video where the drummer for Megadeth creates and plays the drum part for "Mr. Brightside" by the Killers... with no knowledge of the song. This is a recurring segment on the channel (Drumeo). But - one of the best parts is when he talks about the realities of being a professional... "In general, what I've learned is that there's usually not as much time to prepare as you'd like to. So, if you go into it with the mindset of 'I'm just gonna do the best I can do with the time I have', you know, it's usually a good place to start" This is great advice for us all. There is never enough time to do all the thinking, prep, and planning we want. At some point, we need to focus on doing our best with our limited time. To be sure, there are things you can do - reduce scope, look at existing solutions, build off of previous work, etc... but at the end of the day, the act of creation is a commitment to getting things done. The great part is that this builds your creative muscle over time - leading to better results with less effort. Not only does this help you get more done with less time, but it also gives you a better foundation for the things that you *can* invest more time in... leading to even better results overall.
