Land and Expand Someday, I will write a post about how disastrous it was when I tried expanding Explara - We love events & communities to all things "experiences" (in 2015/2016) by pivoting from event ticketing. That one expansion attempt was almost a dead-end. We had to pull back. Go back to event ticketing only. Context: I was writing a post, so thought to share the bytes... Expansion sounds great, but expanding to a segment that changes your ICP & CAC would mean a new business. + Many other factors.

Hopin was at the forefront of the Covid #Saas inflated valuations. In those times (that we have forgotten quite fast) we were imagining a different world, one were commuting should have become a thing of the past and #wfh a new reality. In that fragment of time, there was a renewed hope for our planet and #climatechange as well. The establishment has brought us back to square one; visionaries have been kicked in the nuts by myopic governments and the #middleclass has been suppressed once again with a new "old" mentality crawling back - back to 20th century #wars, crazy inflation that has completely destroyed the #buyingpower of many citizens, Milton Friedman-like mentality driven #layoffs and the call to return to the office that companies like Amazon are pushing for. In this "new" old world, yeah, there's no space for innovators like Hopin to thrive. Even Meta and Mark Zuckerberg were ridiculed in their attempt to bring #virtualreality and a #metaverse for both private and professional objectives, decimating and attacking their #equity. Is this all a coincidence? Hell no. #positivism #optimism and #evolution are under threat by mediocre and anachronistic thinking. I am not joining this #bandwagon

What's strange to me about Hopin's dramatic fall from a $7.75b valuation to a $50m fire sale (and only $15m in upfront payment), is actually not the sky-high multiples on revenue of previous rounds. Yes, those multiples were overly optimistic. When they raised at $7.75b, I believe the multiple was 75x ARR. And yet, not crazier than many other rounds from 2021. What's staggering to me is this: I have rarely met people that truly enjoy virtual conferences. The very thing that Hopin was built around - online events - is actually not a product most people enjoy (still at your desk, too many distractions, no physical interactions with others, no break from the routine, etc.). To get that type of giant valuation - everything else aside - the end user-facing product needs to be truly loved. Virtual events are not. It doesn't matter that Hopin was a good platform to host them. Virtual events are not a mass product, so the platform that enables them cannot be a $7.75b company.
