As Marco Steinsieck points out in his review of Cannes “𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘮𝘢𝘫𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘣𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘩 𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘴𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘴 𝘸𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘰𝘤𝘤𝘶𝘱𝘪𝘦𝘥 𝘣𝘺 𝘙𝘔𝘕𝘴, 𝘙𝘔𝘕 𝘵𝘦𝘤𝘩 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘴, 𝘢𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘺 𝘣𝘶𝘺𝘦𝘳𝘴, 𝘰𝘳 𝘙𝘔𝘕 𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘯𝘦𝘭𝘴. Some very interesting insights from United Airlines & how they are setting up their advertising network. #2 The Beet TV session with Parbinder Dhariwal, VP CVS Media Exchange (CMX) Marcus Harper from The Trade Desk and Amie Owen from Kinesso Commerce - which set the tone for the week talking about audiences + data. #3 The Kroger Precision Marketing / 84.51˚ team of Cara Pratt & Brian Spencer had a fantastic panel with Diana Haussling of Colgate Dana McGraw from Disney called "Creating the Happiest Place in CTV" - an eye-popping insight into the use of audiences + data as well as team structures on the back of Retail Media. #4 Boston Consulting Group (BCG) Retail Media 3.0 panel with Lauren Wiener Cara Pratt Parbinder Dhariwal Richard Nunn #5 Speaking at Nectar360 Retail Media Summit (big thanks to Alice Anson and Amir Rasekh) & seeing Paul Brooks of Coles 360 showing how Retail Media is done 'down under' #6 IAB Morning breakfast on Instore Measurement hosted by the inimitable Yara Daher & Jeffrey Bustos #7 Speaking in the Palais about Creative, Media + Commerce Combined featuring some great brand case studies. We had a great day at the InternetRetailing hosted event, Retail Media X, this week! We had the opportunity to hear from industry leaders through thought-provoking presentations and engaging fireside panel discussions. 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗸𝗲𝘆 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀: 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗸𝗲𝘆: Retailers will win with brands if they are collaborative and transparent with their data. Showing what’s working, as well as being open and honest around what’s not worked, in a standardised framework, is key to driving long term business growth 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝘂𝗹𝗹 𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗹 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗢𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆: Retail media is extending out of the store and into the upper marketing funnel, way beyond the short term ROAS metric. However, to win against more traditional brand building channels, evolved metrics that prove ROI need to be adopted. Conversely, for retailers to attract brand budgets into their owned store and online spaces, it is important to create and curate immersive brand experiences, delivered consistently and at scale. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗮 £: There are no new ‘retail media dollars’. A fragmented and complex ecosystem of retailer walled gardens will become an increasing barrier for brands to navigate. The Retail Media industry needs to work collectively to attract spend from other channels. Retail Media Networks must be able to integrate easily into an agency’s media planning and buying process through use of consistent formats and technology to deliver a frictionless end-to-end trading experience. Colin Lewis talked about ‘The Chasm’ a retailer must traverse - the elements of its business to address in order to move from a trade income business to generating incremental retail media revenue successfully. If brands want to expand to more retail media networks, they will need to invest in staff. Together with Stratably, we interviewed digital executives to learn more about how they ‘do’ retail media, and we found that brands with no dedicated staff, that typically rely on an agency partner, are active on three to four retail media networks, whereas teams of 10 or more engage with seven or eight networks, on average.
