Regret. Because I never asked. Once a year, for over a decade, Professor Susan Scafidi invites me to give the final talk at Fordham University School of Law’s Fashion Law Bootcamp. I’m honored to contribute to the conclusion of this powerful program. And, once a year, for over a decade, after the event, a regret accompanies me home. As a speaker, my goal is to inspire with my career stories and my hard earned lessons. How would it look if I asked the audience to do something for me? I feared I would appear unprofessional or selfish. I feared I would lose credibility. I feared I would negatively impact the program. But after so much time, a bigger fear emerged. Above all, I feared additional regret. Preparing this year, I added a talking point. I had no excuse. I couldn’t forget. I wouldn’t regret. Near the end of my speech, while discussing the power of asking for the tangible, I took a breath. “I’ve given this talk for years and have no proof. I’ve been afraid to ask… and now I will. Can someone near the back please take a photo of me?” Laugher. 💕 I stood still, shoulders back, and smiled. 📸 After a few seconds, I continued my talk. When my presentation was over several students airdropped me files, thanked me, and shared stories of speakers who took selfies or asked for pictures during a presentation. And now I have a photograph of moment where I practiced what I preach. Ask for what you want. We analyze the arguments and smirk at the memes. Over dinner, we debate the likely outcome. Intellectually invested, we crave closure. Was I right? Who will win? What are the consequences? Unfortunately, most of us will never learn the ending to our favorite media frenzy filled lawsuit. A legal finale is often linked to a confidentiality clause. We are left with a life void. An engrossing book is slammed shut forever hiding the important last chapter. It’s unsettling; it’s also common. About 95% of lawsuits settle. There has gotta be a better way!
