Sanford Burnham Prebys recognized the beginning of Pride month with a Pride flag-raising event on Friday, June 7, 2024. The gathering included an opportunity for speakers in a variety of roles throughout the Institute to share comments on the meaning of the Pride flag in their lives and careers. 🏳️🌈 David Brenner, M.D., president, CEO and Donald Bren Chief Executive Chair at Sanford Burnham Prebys, opened the ceremony, saying, “I’m very proud of everyone for working together to make this a welcoming community.” Alessandra (Lale) Cecchini, Ph.D., postdoctoral associate in the lab of Alessandra Sacco, Ph.D., concluded the formal ceremony, reflecting, “This gesture speaks loudly about who we are and what we stand for in terms of valuing acceptance, unity, respect and kindness.” She added, “While we have come a long way, we still have further to go. As today's political theater attacks the relevance, significance and importance of #DEI, my heart is warmed seeing this post from my alma mater The University of Notre Dame. True colors are beginning to show, as organizations and individuals are walking back their commitment to #DEI, proving their interest was mostly performative. #DEI must be interwoven into the fabric and DNA of an organization, be a foundational pillar in the organization's vission and mission, and not be viewed as a separate program or initiative. Organizational leaders in #DEI must have roles that contribute to vision and mission achievement across the core business functions that create business value, else they will be on the chopping block when the market turns and costs need to be cut. When #DEI is run as a program or an initiative, the end is inevitably in sight.

No one can wear the shoe of an another but we can be present in the moment to respect, value and cherish all who bring something to the table provided that we remain authentic to our own being. Throughout my life, I have aimed for milestones and goals so high that people would tell me to "reach for the stars". What learning from everyone around me has taught me is that I do not want to reach for the stars - I rather want to be part of the most awesome galaxy of stars - each one shining brightly and the brilliance of shine of belonging! With that, I have been part of Steering Committee of Carroll Citizens for Racial Equity (CCRE) for quite a few years. While we know that Carroll County in Maryland has a long way to go for a complete assurance of everyone knowing and believing that they belong, this grassroots organization is slowly and surely moving and inching towards the aura of galaxy of stars. Both as a citizen of Carroll County, a Steering Committee member of CCRE and a faculty of Carroll Community College, I am so pleased that we will offer our annual Conference this Friday, April 26th at Carroll Community College. It is an annual Conference that required months of planning and to see it coming to fruition yet again this year makes me believe in the "being" of the human being. Gov. Wes Moore and Lt. Gov. Aruna Miller administration stands on the principle of leaving no one behind. Truly how can we leave anyone behind when all must belong? As the last of the Pride parades fade into memory and the rainbow flags are tenderly folded away, a vital question lingers in the air, touching hearts and minds with a gentle yet urgent call. What will you do in the months after Pride to make the world a brighter, more inclusive place for everyone? This thought struck me as I walked through the vibrant celebrations across Boston, my heart full of gratitude for the freedoms we cherish and the progress we've made. Yet, as June gives way to July, the spirit of Pride beckons us not to pack it away but to carry it forward, transforming our collective joy into action. How can we extend this momentum beyond the confines of a single month and make every day a testament to love, acceptance, and unity? Imagine a world where each month after Pride is dedicated to furthering the cause of equality and compassion—'Nourish Month' to feed our souls and the souls of others, 'Protect Month' to defend the rights and dignity of all, 'Nurture Month' to foster growth and well-being within our communities, and 'Care Month' to demonstrate empathy and support across divides. What role will you play in bringing these ideals to life? How will you contribute to building a safer, kinder, and more nurturing world for the generations to come? The legacy of Pride is not confined to June; it's a living, breathing movement that thrives on our daily actions and commitments. Pivot Point: Stephen Miller and AFL are at it again. They have been hunting out DEI practices at over 20 major corporations and now turn their focus to the NFL and the Rooney Rule. My position is unequivocal: AFL's stance seeks to narrow rather than broaden talent pools by perpetuating the exclusion of underrepresented groups. Their assertion that adding people of color to candidate pools inherently implies inferior qualifications is not only false but also discriminatory. This flawed logic disregards the reality of industries like professional sports, where players of color dominate the field. Denying qualified individuals from underrepresented groups the opportunity to compete based on their race is not only unjust but also detrimental to fostering diversity and inclusion in our workplaces. It's imperative to challenge such misguided perspectives and advocate for equitable opportunities for all.
