How are you managing the lull point between Christmas and New Year? I’m loving the chance to pause and reflect. 2023 has been the biggest year of change for me within my career history. I am so proud of the new skills I have developed and the successes delivered during the course of one year. Here are a few of my proud moments (my ta da list! 😉). I have... 🙂 Embraced change - bounced back post-redundancy with my natural energy, enthusiasm and resilience to manage uncertainty and embrace change 🆕 Became an entrepreneur - set up a new business with my husband and business partner Julian Kirk... who would have thought a husband and wife team can actually work? 👩🎨 Got creative - developed our own new branding, set up a website (for someone not great with technical stuff, that was impressive), had fun on Canva! 🔗 Got connected - attended networking events and broadened my reach meeting some great new people, listening and learning from their experiences 🙏 Thankful - to family, friends, old colleagues and new connections for your encouragement and support 🌟 Proud - of successes delivered within my interim roles at Premier Foods and Hilton Food Group and for delivering continous support to new Kirk Marketing and Media clients - Pickstock, Stonegate and Jo Sims 🙂 Diverse achievements - with my breadth of skills and experience every week has been different and I have risen to the challenge. - shaping strategic thinking for business, brands and categories - extracting value from data to identify robust category/ranging plans - inspiring new thinking, facilitating and evaluating new ideas - creating marketing communication plans to engage with new audiences - providing leadership and supporting teams to deliver marketing excellence - gaining recognition for ease of integration and results delivered ❤️ Last but not least, I’ve invested time in me and my family, even the dog is happy to get some extra walks 🐶 🙌 So, I end the year celebrating success and looking forward to 2024 with energy and enthusiasm to deliver more…. As a long- time marketing professional, I've been amused and baffled several times at a companies view of what marketing is, what it can do, and how it should be used for. While working in marketing, my colleagues and I have been asked to plan company parties, to find and distribute client gifts, and to conduct tours of the facility on the "Bring Your Daughter to Work Day." All of these activities were fun, but truthfully, had very little to do with marketing objectives. I used to jokingly (kind of) refer to marketing as the dumping ground of any organization. I've grown to believe that many CEOs and Sr. VPs who rose through the ranks managed to bypass a tour with marketing. I worked for one organization that was very progressive both in terms of product and business operations, so imagine how stunned our team was to hear our CEO admit that he didn't really understand the purpose of a marketing department but that the founders said there needed to be one. Over time, I've learned to accept some weird assignments and appreciate them for what I could learn. Because of some of these odd requests, I can make group flight reservations, find gift baskets than can be shipped to customers in 2 days, and put together a country rec softball team and register and get them in league play. I love my career, and I'm grateful to all the organizations that have given me the chance learn, to grow, and to do weird tasks! #marketing #weirdtasks #ilovemarketing

Incredible things happen when teams focus on growth with purpose. But it doesn’t happen by itself and it’s not always easy to achieve. Take Sunshine Marketing (not the real name). This firm almost doubled in size in just 12 months. It all got rather chaotic, so it had to put new systems and processes in place. The trouble was, this slowed the growth down. Sunshine Marketing had encountered the stable/dynamic paradox. Furthermore, getting things done became a lot harder. There were now lots of meetings and new layers of management, but nothing was actually happening.  Sunshine Marketing was failing to turn knowledge into action. Finally, frustrations were brewing up among the team and the board became dysfunctional. Sunshine Marketing had neglected teamwork as a strategy. What happened at Sunshine Marketing highlights perfectly the three big challenges associated with achieving sustainable growth.
