Would you want to do national service? The UK government are suggesting that 18 year olds now either join the army for a year at 18 years old or work weekends doing stuff for the government. I think this is the wrong huge policy change. It is appealing to the judgement of older voters who think the new generation are lazy and need some “discipline” but they clearly don’t know this new generation and / or worse are using this new generation to win older votes who believe. The conservatives are meant to be the party of entrepreneurship but why not believe in your young people and give them for example financial literacy and business training and help to do something they love. Why create a punishment model (national service is also what a lot of criminals do when they break the law in the UK). It makes no sense. Let me know what you think below should young people be forced to do national service? #dontvote perhaps? #politics #conservatives #whatsyourdream #debt
Reminds me of me gran, she always said, "You can't learn much about life from a rifle, unless you're cleaning it!" Honestly, I think it'd be more useful if they had us all do a year in customer service. Nothing teaches patience like dealing with people who think Wi-Fi is something you catch in the rain! But imagine it, 18-year-olds learning how to handle a budget, start a business, and maybe even fix a boiler – now that's proper training for life. I say, let's teach them skills that make them feel like superheroes rather than soldiers. Give 'em a toolkit for success, not a set of marching orders! Besides, how many times can you polish your boots before you start dreaming about opening a shoe shop?
I'll leave my own two cents here. Originally, I'm from Lithuania, where national service is mandatory. For the person I was (undisciplined, without any goals or aspirations, and living a very comfortable life), it was one of the best things I've ever done. Now, I agree that it's not for everyone, but I would guess that the majority of UK youth would benefit from joining the army.
No one is forcing them to do national service but a lot of young people do need some sense of direction since it is so easy for them to skip school and get away with it since the pandemic. If it is selective for those who have no ambitions what is wrong with that?
Unless he chooses to do so my child would not be joining the Army if this becomes mandatory. I think for those that fall under the category of NEET working locally to help in services might give the person the necessary impetus, skill or trade to carry on post volunteering, but the role should always be non combatant. Rishi talks about 'National Pride' there is very little of this flying around, I know this from my conversations with young people, sad but true. The governments have whittled down the armed forces to a shadow of what they were and are now asking our children to take their place. I am sorry but for me this is a definite no.
Just a 💭 Simon ⚡️ Perhaps all politicians should have to serve their country first, before they get to make the big decisions? Leadership is about having direct experience firstly in order to take big decisions or suggest something.
I can't believe you don't think that getting young people to contribute to their local communities is a net positive for society. My mind is blown, never thought you'd be against that
Definitely! Let's encourage and empower the next generation instead of disciplining them.
Simon Squibb why do you live in the UK? Like you I’ve travelled and lived in many other countries and cities. I’m curious what’s here for you?

1moSimon Squibb - you're 100% accurate on this. the policy is madness. On a cultural level, and having spent some time in the TA, i like the idea of a national service, but regardless of branch of service this should be paid. but given that this has been rolled out as an election pledge, its clear this is pandering to voters of a specific ideology, and actually doesn't really do anything for the UK. first, whos' going to pay for those that elect for the military option? where will the funds come from. next, whats the 'punishment' going to be for those that don't and why should they be punished given theres been 2.5 generations that haven't had to be subject to this? next, whats going to be the cost to managing all of this? a new privatised recruitment and placement entity that'll gain mystery funding from the government and do a covid testing app job of it? Finally, whats the need? its not like we have hitler on the doorstep and planes overhead, surely there are better ways to allocate the talent of the nation, free university for instance?
