In South Carolina 17 counties don't have an active general psychiatric physician. Roles focused on mental health are among the top 50 healthcare jobs in the United States. Compared to a year ago, nursing vacancies have skyrocketed, growing as much as 351%. The most in-demand position is that of a nurse, advertising 437,168 vacancies in June, followed by nursing assistant (104,275 jobs) and specialized physician (55,378 jobs), according to research from job search engine Adzuna. These numbers are all slated to worsen. South Carolina is lined up to have one of the worst healthcare work shortages in the country. Issues impacting healthcare worker burnout is a national issue that must be addressed. We have to improve working conditions and pipeline issues. We have to provide livable wages for all healthcare workers and address barriers like the cost of education to support the next generation of nurses.

Culture change starts with leadership. Nursing Leaders and management have to stop being prideful with the roles they are in, they have to be willing to put scrubs back on or get back to the bedside or in the field when their nurses need help. So many forget what it was like as they move up the ladder and that they to where that struggling nurse at some point who needed a mangers support in crisis or difficult situations. Nothing can take place of a human being or additional support right next to you, even when you know how to handle a difficult situation. It’s even more impactful when you don’t know what to do but your team and you know they won’t let you struggle alone. Mt team knows I’m in the field with them or that they can call me with any question or situation and I’ll do my best to help empower them to do the right thing & if in don’t know a solution or the answer, I’ll find someone who does. We have to change the culture narrative of nursing and healthcare. Nursing is essential to improving health outcomes and healthcare delivery across settings – including in hospitals, nursing homes and other facilities, as well as in community practices such as nurse-run clinics, provider offices, health centers, schools, and home and community-based care.

I agree with Patrick. This is an awful take. I also agree that mandated ratios alone do not address the staffing and safety issues in nursing. Sometimes those ratios are still too much for safe care. Ideally we would staff based on patient needs, skill level, and acuity including patient education needs. Staffing should be based on ensuring that patients receive safe and high quality care, BUT our nurse leaders have had decades to address safe staffing and patient and nurse safety is worse - not better. We must have federal staffing ratios to protect patients and nurses. If healthcare leaders were committed to safe care and healthy work environments we would not be here. We would not need federal intervention. C Suite nurses are out of touch. We must mandate safe and healthy healthcare settings. We cannot sustain the current approach to staffing and maintain a qualified and competent workforce.
