You’re considering an op-ed. It’s on a crucially important topic on which you have authority. You know how much it matters and you have something valuable to contribute. One crucial factor you have to consider, though, is will it matter to the audience of the outlet you’re pitching? Will it capture their attention and interest? Ending hunger in America is crucially important, but an op-ed calling to end hunger won’t get placed if it doesn’t: • Offer a controversial or counterintuitive take. • Describe a new, innovative solution. • Or challenge the reader’s preconception. If almost all readers already agree with you, it’s a sign you’re on the wrong track. Importance alone isn’t the deciding factor.
