The weaponisation of #Pride is a distraction. We live in a world where not only are migrants fleeing queerphobic conditions in their home countries as a result of colonial legacies, but also in a world where states and corporations weaponise the queer struggle in order to pit us against each other, distract us from these same colonial legacies, and divert our attention away from the violence that continues to be enacted against racialised and other marginalised communities, both at home and abroad. Pride teaches us that colonial systems can never be reformed. They must be dismantled. In the spirit of Pride’s radical history, we must defy the corporatisation, weaponisation and distortion of the queer struggle. We must defy divisive politics, and understand that we are all being oppressed by the same systems. Pride is about justice and liberation, not about inclusion into systems that were designed to be oppressive. Promoting the idea that begging is an acceptable way to address poverty can have unintended consequences. Indian films and TV serials have long depicted such narratives, appealing to the emotions of the audience but potentially sending a misleading message to society, especially to those in poverty. This portrayal might unintentionally suggest that relying on handouts is a justified solution due to their circumstances. In an example from this video script, a band player is shown stealing or taking food without permission for his family out of desperation. A more constructive approach could have been to depict the character seeking help in a dignified manner, such as offering to play more music in return for food. This exchange not only preserves his dignity but also encourages a culture of mutual respect and support. Being in a difficult situation should not exempt one from ethical behavior. Unfortunately, the recurring theme in Indian cinema of glorifying quick fixes over ethical solutions has contributed to shifting priorities from values and ethics to immediate needs, potentially fostering an environment where crime can thrive. We should strive to promote narratives that uphold dignity, encourage ethical solutions to poverty, and emphasize the importance of working together respectfully.
