This is a great activity that can be used in multiple contexts.
Flocking together The community centers are often a lifeline for people forcibly displaced from the war. Places where they can get information about services available, but also to connect and to express. Here at the Lviv Palace of Culture, displaced young people who have experience profound disconnection from family and community, are taking a movement class as part of a theatre therapy effort. The rules are simple: watch the person next to you and imitate the movements and speed. Soon, they move as one, in almost a dance, their attention focused outside themselves, reclaiming connection and space through sound and movement.

Dear Readers, allow us to introduce ourselves and our work to you. We are a 501(c)3 nonprofit theatre company dedicated to reviving the historical artform of literary burlesque for contemporary audiences. What, might you ask, is literary burlesque? Well, it's burlesque that uses classic literature as it's source material. With our unique approach to adapting classic stories infused with burlesque dance, we aim to rework and reclaim the literary canon from queer, feminist, anti-racist, and sex-positive standpoints. Here's what that looks like in action:

It's no longer cdc’s tagline; it remains an expression of our foundational pillars: faith, freedom + justice 👊🏽🔥✊🏽🤗 Today's iteration 👉🏽 the 3 focus areas of our mission: - the Arts as healing for freedom - rooted in Spirituality - insisting on Social Impact Whatever a person’s faith or belief system, most of us know that we do not get to full freedom and lasting justice without relying on an ever-present power that we cannot see – yet makes everything possible. It's how we accomplish our mission of building freed•dom for Black people from within thru the arts. It's how we live into our vision of BEing fully free. #artistsoflinkedin #theatre #writersoflinkedin #freedomwriters #tellingourstories #entrepreneursoflinkedin #blackowned #womanowned #blackgirlmagic #candigirl #candygirls #candidugas #candidugascollective #buildingfreedom #faithfreedomjustice #thursdaythoughts #thursdaytime #thursday

How do you engage your community in a #DEI initiative? It starts with mindset. “When we think about implementing any kind of diversity strategy, we want to shift away from ‘I’m trying to be aware,’ ‘I’m trying to be nice,’ ‘I’m trying to do this socially acceptable thing,’ to discovering what is necessary to the people that are marginalized in your community." A huge thanks to Bliss Griffin for sharing her thoughts and expertise. My latest for EdTA.
Missed Bliss Griffin's insights at the Theatre Education Conference? We've got you covered. Ahead of the conference, we discussed the essence of socially conscious programming with a focus on community engagement. Explore the blog to learn how to shift from mere awareness to meaningful engagement with marginalized communities in your #theatre season. 🎭 #CommunityEngagement #TheatreEducation #Inclusivity #powerofyou #TEC2023 #EdTA

The recent controversy surrounding the West End production of "Slave Play" in London has sparked important discussions about the need for spaces where marginalized communities, particularly Black individuals, can feel safe and celebrated. The decision to host Black Out Nights, specifically inviting Black audiences, has been met with both support and criticism. 🔍 It's essential to recognize that creating affinity spaces is not about exclusion but about providing a sense of belonging and safety for communities that have historically been marginalized. As playwright Jeremy O. Harris aptly explains, radical invitations are necessary to counteract the pervasive notion that certain groups do not belong in theater spaces. 🎟️ The intention behind Black Out Nights is not to enforce segregation but to actively welcome Black individuals into a space where they may not have felt comfortable or represented in the past. This initiative aims to break down barriers and foster a sense of inclusivity in an industry that has often overlooked or marginalized diverse voices. 💡 Harris's personal experience (which I completely fall into this category too) underscores the importance of initiatives like Black Out Nights. For many individuals from underrepresented backgrounds, access can be limited, and initiatives like this can serve as a gateway to experiencing and engaging with the arts. This moment is an opportunity to reflect on how we can create more inclusive and equitable spaces within the arts. By embracing diversity and actively inviting communities who've been underrepresented into the fold, we can enrich our cultural landscape and ensure that the arts truly belong to everyone. #Arts #Culture #Theater #UK #Race #AffinityGroups #DEI #RepresentationMatters #Inclusion #Equity #DiversityInArts #Intersectionality #BlackArtists #BIPOCRepresentation #SocialJustice #AccessToArts #Empowerment #RadicalInclusion #CommunityBuilding #ArtisticExpression #Empathy #SupportTheArts #CulturalEquity
