Crews at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory Oak Ridge Research Reactor (Building 3042) are using a hydraulic reciprocating saw to section the reactor shell for placement in a shipping cask. Underwater cutting of the lower reactor vessel is also in progress while workers repair the facility crane. The team is making final preparations for packaging and shipping the vessel. #EnvironmentalCleanup

Our crews just completed the largest soil remediation at the East Tennessee Technology Park. The 3-year project removed more than 100,000 cubic yards of contaminated soil, which equates to nearly 8,500 dump truck loads. Twelve years ago, UCOR removed the largest source of groundwater contamination at Oak Ridge National Laboratory known as Tank W-1A. The 4,000-gallon container, commissioned in 1951, collected/stored liquid waste from radiochemical separations & high radiation analytical facilities. The tank and surrounding contaminated soil were removed after it leaked and caused significant soil and ground water contamination. #EnvironmentalCleanup

UCOR is preparing to demolish the massive Alpha-2 building at the Y-12 National Security Complex. Workers are filling the basement area with a concrete mixture, creating a slab that will allow heavy equipment to maneuver during demolition. https://lnkd.in/eSATTzub
UCOR partnered with contractor PERMA-FIX ENVIRONMENTAL SVCS to develop a treatment pathway for 25, 55-gallon drums of hard-to-treat waste that have been in storage on the Oak Ridge Reservation for over 30 years. The waste contains a unique class of chemicals called dioxins and furans, which require a specialized refinement or “treatment train” to prepare the waste for disposal. #EnvironmentalCleanup
UCOR always looks for ways to reuse materials rather than sending them to landfills. After removing asphalt from a decommissioned portion of Bear Creek Road, we reused the asphalt at the under-construction Environmental Management Disposal Facility, which will handle Oak Ridge Reservation cleanup waste. We also shipped 3,140 tons to Duracap Asphalt Paving Company, Inc. for reuse in new asphalt mixtures. #sustainability #EnvironmentalCleanup
Cleaning up former nuclear sites is more than tearing down buildings. In fact, 10 years ago ETTP workers removed more than 60 rusty, empty metal storage containers that once dotted the ETTP landscape. They disposed of more than 500 truckloads of this legacy waste—enough to cover a basketball court 30 feet deep. #EnvironmentalCleanup
