Program Director, College of Information Studies & University Career Center at University of Maryland | Supporter of college students' career and identity development
Fall 2023 Host Registration for the Intern for a Day program through University Career Center & the President's Promise at the University of Maryland is now open! Please consider registering to support UMD students as they explore what potential pathways are available for them in their own careers. 1) What is Intern for a Day? The University Career Center's popular Intern for a Day program connects undergraduate UMD students with professionals (including alumni, parents/family members, and other off-campus partners) for in-person job shadowing or virtual informational interviewing experiences to explore potential career fields of interest. After participating in a mandatory orientation and completing an application, University Career Center staff match students with a professional of interest for a half- or full-day job shadowing experience or a virtual informational interview. 2) Who can or should participate as a host? This is a great opportunity for anyone who is interested in providing college students with exposure to the work you do, your organization, your industry, and/or your career path. We are absolutely interested in hosts from any industry, as this program serves all undergraduate students at the University of Maryland. Questions? Email ifad@umd.edu. Register to be a Fall 2023 Intern for a Day host by completing the form below by September 3rd, 2023: https://lnkd.in/degCxwaU

I Just came across the story of Demar Bellamy-Foster, whose media BTEC led to a Hollywood internship on Warner Bros' Fantastic Beasts! 🌟 What an incredible start to a career! However, there's a storm brewing in the UK education landscape. The government's plan to overhaul skills education may see the axe fall on some beloved BTECs, diverting students towards T-levels – a move raising eyebrows and concerns. What do I think?🤔 - BTECs are practical, skills-based courses loved by students, employers, and universities. - T-levels offer a more focused approach but come at the cost of established qualifications. - You could argue that the narrow career focus of T-levels might limit options for students uncertain about their future at 15 or 16. - Defunding could impact disadvantaged students who rely on BTECs to access higher education. Why discard something that's working well for all stakeholders? What are your thoughts on this shift in the education landscape? How can we ensure a balanced approach that caters to diverse student needs and aspirations? Let's discuss! #FutureOfWork Here is the link to the story - https://lnkd.in/gD-dNneV

HBCU courses often emphasize community engagement, leadership, and social justice, fostering a strong sense of cultural identity and pride among students. The curriculum typically includes general education requirements, major-specific courses, and opportunities for research, internships, and experiential learning. HBCUs are known for their supportive environments, smaller class sizes, and faculty dedicated to student success and mentorship. This unique combination helps students achieve academic excellence while preparing them for professional careers and civic involvement. 1.833.364.3422 (1.833.3NID-HCA)
