I often wonder if we as security practitioners know how dystopic it can be for the rest of the organization to be focused on building and investing heavily in building a "Culture of Trust", while the Security team promotes "Zero-Trust" principles to senior leadership? So often the #Security team can be seen as the antithesis of everything an organization wants to promote internally and externally. The importance of language can't be minimized. Even as we talk among ourselves, we need to make sure the security marketing principles and buzzwords don't drive greater division and space between the goals of the organization and the mission and values of the Security Team. Please don't misunderstand my post. It is okay to adopt the "Zero-Trust" principle as a framework used to design a security program, but it is incredibly important to break the term down in addition to its elements and translate it to other stakeholders / operational units in ways that align with the language of the business and enables broader organization-wide goals. #securityculture #changemanagement #securitycommunication #informationsecurity

Helping High-Performance Leaders Find Clarity to Communicate, Collaborate, and Deliver Value Faster in Chaotic Corporate Environments
In the world of security, addressing every issue can spread you thin. What if the key to connecting security to business results isn't just solving problems, but choosing the right ones? It took me a while to figure out that not all problems are equal. Figuring out the right problems to solve takes 3 steps: 1. Diagnosis your situation and environment 2. Clarify and align goals 3. Set priorities Once you understand your situation and goals, you can tell a better security story that resonates with your business colleagues. #NNDV #Leadership

There is a lack of empathy among CISOs and other executive and senior leaders. I admit, it is something I struggle with as well. In the Marine Corps, we operated on the mentality of “immediate, willing, obedience to orders” and if someone senior says jump, you say “how high”? It may be engrained in me to this day. We have an objective, do whatever it takes to accomplish that. Over time, I have learned (and I am still learning) that understanding the challenges and pressures our teams face, listening to the concerns of our business partners, and recognizing the anxieties of end-users, can make all the difference. As Brené Brown wisely said, “Empathy is simply listening, holding space, withholding judgment, emotionally connecting, and communicating that incredibly healing message of ‘You’re not alone.’” You’re not alone, and neither am I. If you’re also finding it challenging to strike that balance, know that you’re not alone. I will continue working on becoming more empathetic, will you? #CybersecurityLeadership #EmpathyInLeadership #CISO #CybersecurityCulture
