With technological innovations such as long-rage sensors, continuous, non-obtrusive monitoring of animals becomes a reality. This can help learn more about the behavior of herds of prey animals, like zebras and impalas. Similarly, the IoT can also help protect endangered species like elephants and rhinos, supporting the work of local rangers. By integrating non-terrestrial satellite networks with terrestrial networks, we can cover remote areas with limited connectivity and over huge distances – such as those traversed by animals in deserts or oceans. The sensors’ long battery life is more cost-effective and animal-friendly. Plus, they can provide near real-time information, which can then be shared with local communities and empower them to engage in conserving their environment. Moreover, IoT sensors can even help protect the lives of honeybees – a species critical to the health of our ecosystems – by monitoring optimal conditions in the hives and detecting invaders like wasps and hornets. Two way #satellitemessengers integrated with #dataserialization techniques could reduce the catch information to around 80 alphanumerical characters. An application that works in offline mode could provide output as serialized data, that can be further communicated through satellite messengers. Satellite messengers are affordable communication alternatives to expensive satellite phones and can enable fisheries e-trading from oceans, beyond mobile tower coverage. The concept could be further extended for real time ocean reporting through IoT devices. #Resinnovblue project as part of its coastal resilience strategy, is progressing to avail #satellitemessengers with location information, to enable catch and habitat reporting, from oceans and rural areas without mobile network coverages.
