Someone recently asked me what inspired the creation of LinkTech, and to answer that, I took a trip down memory lane to the early days of my employment journey and there's one aspect that always kept me on my toes - hiring. While I'm passionate about recruiting, training, and nurturing talent, balancing it with day-to-day operations was quite a challenge. I remember those early mornings doing admin work, the midday switch to interviews and training, and finally, the evenings dedicated to networking. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely LOVE what I do, but there were times when I was running on fumes, giving it my all at just 60%. Enter LinkTech! This venture was born with multiple goals in mind, one of them being to alleviate the load on managers to prevent burnout. I've been there and get it- it's no fun. ✨ Be more like Digitalent - Technology & Creative Recruitment ✨ Just a back story: I hit my head a few years back, causing some damage, giving me chronic seizures and some speech problems. Honestly, it changed my life thick and fast. I had multiple surgeries to relieve the pressure on my brain and every 18 months I have it again. But Digitalent - Technology & Creative Recruitment(not just the business but the people) always: 1. Offer to support me if I need to take an hour or two out my day to recuperate after a seizure. 2. Trust me implicitly that the job will get done. 3. ALWAYS offer to pick things up if I have to go to a hospital appointment or become ill. 4. Create an environment where I feel safe to share if I am struggling with my seizures. This point is probably the most important of all. In the past I sometimes felt I could not share for the fear of judgement. It has gotten to the point, that I just pop a note on my slack that I am away from my desk and there has never even been a question around it. I provide career Botox for Gen X—the Britpop and rave generation now facing severe ageism in the tech workplace. You might have experienced this yourself, but in the last 12 months, mass layoffs have left many from Gen X struggling to find work. Over the last year I've coached more Gen X 'green banner' bearers than any other group. Undoubtedly, Gen Xers are now being overlooked for roles in favour of younger generations or are dismissed as 'overqualified', largely due to perception. The root of the problem? That outdated, wrinkly old CV and dusty LinkedIn profile. So what’s the solution? Job hunt coaching and personal branding sessions! I help Gen Xers counter ageism by injecting some sparkle into their personal brands, and it's all centred around crafting a bulletproof personal value proposition. For tech leaders/professionals, I eleminate any mention of the length of experience. Instead of stating, 'I have 25 years of experience in IT Project Management', I help people build out robust capability pillars backed up by achievements, and evidence delivery that highlights the latest technology / transformation. The 1990s degree stays in but the dates are removed....we keep em guessing! We adopt a less formal tone of voice to describe abilities and dedicate time to designing a LinkedIn profile that truly stands out— an online personal brand that a 24-year-old content creator would envy. Pure Career Botox! This personal branding strategy is getting results as the market improves, particularly as many hiring managers now prioritise LinkedIn profiles over CVs. I get the sense that GenX tech leaders are really waking up to the power of personal branding, afterall they are life long learners of tech and are the one generation that has gone from Spectrum ZX80 to ChatGPT.
