Cambridge Roar announces cracking line up for popular Comedy Night

Some of the biggest names and emerging stars of the comedy world are set to take to the stage at the Cambridge Roar Festival Comedy night on Friday 22 September.

The live event, which is part of a series organised by the Roar Festival in aid of local charities, is held at the Quy Mill Hotel and Spa.

This year’s four stand-up circuit favourites include:

Headliner Phil Wang is rapidly making a name for himself both in the UK and internationally with clever lines and a trademark laid-back style. As well as a hugely successful run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2014, he also performed at the Montreal Just for Laughs Festival that year, and at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival in 2015.

Phil’s wry outlook and laid-back style have seen him perform on Funniest Moments of 2014 (Channel 4), The Rob Brydon Show (BBC2), Three at the Fringe (BBC3) and on BBC Radio 4’s Fresh From the Fringe and Best Behaviour, and the Comedy Live Lounge (BBC Radio 1).

Lou Sanders has been named as one of the top comics to watch in Vogue, The Sun, TimeOut, London is Funny, Fest Magazine & Dave TV. Her television highlights include Alan Davies’ As Yet Untitled (Dave), Live From the BBC (BBC), Russell Howard’s Good News(BBC 3) and Comedy Up Late.

She has also appeared on and written for numerous shows for channels including Channel 4, Sky, BBC and ITV and has just released the short film Elderflower which she co-wrote with Hannah George (Miranda – BBC 1, Trollied – Sky 1) and co-stars with Sheila Reid (Benidorm – ITV 1), Tom Rosenthal (Friday Night Dinner – Channel 4) and Mike Wozniak (Man Down – Channel 4).

Alun Cochrane Award-winning stand-up comedian Alun Cochrane has appeared on numerous TV shows including Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow, Russell Howards Good News, Mock The Week, Dave’s One Night Stand, Never Mind The Buzzcocks, Have I Got News For You and 8 Out Of 10 Cats. He was featured as series regular Sam in the Sky Living sitcom Trying Again, alongside Chris Addison and has appeared in Coronation Street, Boomers and Russell Howard’s Christmas film A Gert Lush Christmas.

Alun is the co-host of The Frank Skinner Show on Absolute, for which he received a 2012 Arqiva Award nomination for Best Newcomer. The show also won a Sony Award in 2011 for Best Entertainment Programme and was nominated again in 2012.

Adam Hess, Fosters Best Newcomer Nominee 2015, was initially known for his impeccably written surreal one-liners, before later proving himself as an accomplished story-teller and sketch-writer.

In 2013, Adam was nominated for Leicester Mercury New Act of the Year and Best Newcomer at the Chortle Awards. He won the Chortle Student Comedy Award and since then has written for lots of big TV shows (including BBC Two’s Russell Howard’s Good News on which he was a staff writer). He has performed his stand up on Live from the BBC and Comedy up Late in Australia.

Commenting on the Comedy Night, Tony Murdock, Founder and Chairman of the Roar Festival said: “The Comedy Night has been a huge success in the past and is now one of the Roar’s most popular events, so much so that before we had even revealed the acts the evening was getting close to sold out.

“I’m really looking forward to the evening; there’s nothing quite like a superb stand-up comedy set to end a long week at work. I’ve also seen some of these acts before so I know it’s going to be a cracking show!”

The Cambridge Roar Festival, now in its fourth year, raises money for local charities by staging several high-profile events within the grounds of the Quy Mill Hotel and Spa at Stow Cum Quy. The Comedy Night is one of 12 events taking place between 17 June and 30 September 2017.
