Introducing the CHANEL Next Prize

Today Chanel has announced the winners and jury of its inaugural CHANEL Next Prize - a newly established biennial international award to catalyse innovation across the arts and culture.

Developed to provide an emerging generation of creative risk-takers with resources to tackle ambitious new projects, the CHANEL Next Prize creates conditions for artists to experiment with visionary ideas, test new forms of artmaking and collaborate across disciplines.

The Prize extends Chanel’s legacy of arts patronage that began with Gabrielle Chanel’s support of the avant-garde artists of her time and her desire to be part of what happens next, “ce qui va arriver”– hence the “Next” Prize.

Each of the 10 winners will receive funding as well as access to mentorship and networking opportunities to deepen the impact of their trailblazing work. A truly global Prize that celebrates the fluidity between different art forms, 2021 CHANEL Next Prize winners represent 11 countries and disciplines spanning design, film and the performing and visual arts.

The Jury

With the incredible talent that’s in the world, one is really thinking about the eye that sees the world differently, the eye that wants to create a new world,” says architect and CHANEL Next Prize juror Sir David Adjaye, who joined fellow jurors actor Tilda Swinton and artist Cao Fei in selecting the inaugural winners of the House’s first-ever cultural award. “What a wonderful task we had to be part of shining a light on them,” says Tilda Swinton. “Not only as individuals, but on them as a group, as a portrait of a time.”

What's Next ?

I hope that next is ever more awake and responsive to people of all ages,” says juror Tilda Swinton. The composer Jung Jae-il believes “we have to recover the world. We have to think about sustainability.” To poet and artist Precious Okoyomon what’s next is a social imperative: “How do we together, dream up new worlds?” she says. “Because you can’t dream by yourself. That’s not how things work. How do we dream outside of this together?”
