PremiumDelhi Weather Highlights: The Delhi government on Friday announced a slew of measures after the national capital received a record 228 mm rainfall that inundated several areas and brought the city to its knees.
Setting up an emergency control room, quick response teams and dedicated phone numbers to register waterlogging complaints are among the steps announced.
Officials of departments concerned, such as the PWD, Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and the Irrigation and Flood Department will also be present in the control room to coordinate with their departments.

Ahead of the onset of monsoon in the national capital, several parts of Delhi and adjoining areas will witness light to moderate intensity rain with heavy intensity rain over isolated places in the next two hours, said Delhi’s Regional Weather Forecasting Centre on Friday.
“Thunderstorms with light to moderate intensity rain with heavy intensity rain over isolated places and winds with speed of 20-40 Km/h would occur over and adjoining areas of entire Delhi and NCR, Sonipat, Rohtak, Kharkhoda, Mattanhail, Jhajjar, Farukhnagar," wrote RWFC Delhi on X.
Has the monsoon arrived in Delhi?
Since last night, Delhi has witnessed heavy rainfall, and people wonder whether the monsoon has arrived in the national capital. The Indian Meteorological Department on Thursday said that the monsoon will arrive in the national capital in two to three days. Indigo has cancelled all flights that were scheduled to operate from Delhi Airport's T1 terminal, owing to the roof collapse incident early in the morning. The flights are to remain cancelled till until 0000 hrs, June 29. Flights that were to arrive at T1, will now arrive at T2 or T3.
Railings that had been installed along the road divider in Sector 18 at Uttar Pradesh, collapsed and fell on the side of the road after heavy rainfall.
Fire brigade, police and the NDRF are on a rescue operation to save 3 labourers who had fallen into a pit in a contsruction area at Delhi's Vasant Vihar. The labourers were living in temporary huts near the site and the huts collapsed into the pit due to heavy rainfall.
The Delhi Airport has announced on X, that it will support the families of all the individuals. “We have announced a compensation of Rs.20 Lakh to the family of the deceased, and Rs.3 Lakh each to those injured," read the post.
“Experts are saying that in 1936, there was 235 mm of rainfall in the month of June, today there was the second highest rainfall of 228 mm in the month of June after 1936," Bharti told ANI, while commenting that the infrastructure had been built way back. It is not well equipped to handle such heavy rain, that Delhi witnessed on Friday morning.
The Delhi Airport mentioned that all arrivals till 10:30 hours from T1 terminal has been continued. For Spicejet, all arrivals and departures have been shifted to T3. Indigo's operations from T1 terminal have been distributed among T2 and T3 terminals
Delhi Weather Today Live: India Meteorological Department (IMD) officials reported that the Safdarjung base station registered 228.1 mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours up to 8.30 am Friday. During the period from 2.30 am to 5.30 am alone, the station recorded 148.5 mm of rainfall.
The intense rainfall has caused widespread water-logging in Delhi, resulting in power outages in residential areas and submerged roads, leading to severe traffic disruptions.
Union Minister for Civil Aviation, Rammohan Naidu, hurried to Safdarjung Hospital to visit the injured from the IG airport roof collapse. He also intends to meet the family of the deceased. Earlier, he inspected the collapse site.
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla hit out at the Aam Admi Party-run Delhi government after waterlogging was reported from several parts of the city following heavy rains in the early hours of Friday.
The BJP leader claimed that waterlogging was also reported from Minto Bridge which AAP had claimed to have fixed.
Taking to X, Poonawalla said, "Delhi is facing severe water logging in several areas including Minto Bridge (which AAP claimed they had fixed) AAP runs Delhi Jal Board, PWD, MCD. Everything is under AAP But Watch them blame someone else in 3,2,1...."

Bihar saw the collapse of 13 newly constructed bridges between 2023 and 2024, highlighting systemic failures. Additionally, the Pragati Maidan Tunnel submerged and a tragic bridge collapse occurred in Morbi, Gujarat.
The Ministry of Civil Aviation said that all flight operations from Terminal 1 are suspended until further notice in the wake of the canopy collapse incident at Delhi airport on Friday morning.
"Heavy rain in early morning today has resulted in the collapse of the canopy of Delhi Airport Terminal 1. As a result of which flights to & from Terminal 1 have been closed till further notice. Alternate arrangements are being made for the smooth operation of the flights," read the statement from the ministry.
However, the arrival and departure of flights from Terminal 3 and Terminal 2 are fully operational.
Traffic is affected on Minto Road in both carriageways from Kamla Market towards Connaught Place and vice versa due to waterlogging at the Minto Bridge underpass., informed Delhi Police
IndiGo flight operations are impacted due to structural damage to Terminal 1, Delhi Airport because of adverse weather conditions. This has led to flight cancellations at Delhi as passengers are not able to enter the terminal. Passengers already inside the terminal will be able to board their planned flights, but those with flights later in the day will be offered alternatives.
This unplanned situation has also led to operations across the network being impacted. Customers are advised to keep a track of and confirm their flight status before leaving for the airport.

“Due to heavy rains, entry/exit is closed at Yashobhoomi Dwarka Sector - 25 Metro station. Also, the shuttle service from Delhi Aerocity Metro station to Terminal 1-IGI Airport has been suspended. Normal service on all other lines," DMRC wrote on X.
People posted videos and photos of vehicles stuck in inundated roads and long traffic snarls on social media.
In a post on X, the traffic police said, "Traffic is affected on Outer Ring Road in both carriageways from Shantivan towards ISBT and vice-versa due to waterlogging near Y-Point Saleemgarh and Nigambodh Ghat. Kindly plan your journey accordingly."
Traffic at ITO, Vir Banda Bairagi Marg, Dhaula Kuan were also affected due to waterlogging.
“Canopy outbreak at Terminal 1 Departure. Terminal 1 Departure is non-functional. All passengers heading towards Terminal 1 shall use arrival of Terminal 1. Also there is waterlogging at Mehram Nagar underpass towards Terminal 3. Passengers are advised to avoid this route and plan their journey in advance," Delhi Traffic Police said in a post on X.
