MediaWiki Users and Developers Conference

The MediaWiki Users and Developers Conference, or MUDCon, is a twice-yearly event featuring talks, workshops and tutorials relating to the use and development of MediaWiki. The event has a special (though not exclusive) focus on the use of MediaWiki outside of Wikimedia sites. It is generally held in North America in the spring and Europe in the fall/autumn. It is co-organized by the MediaWiki Stakeholders' Group.

This conference addresses everybody interested in wikis and open knowledge, especially in MediaWiki, e.g. users, developers, consultants, business or government representatives, students, and researchers.

Mission

This conference aims to:

  • inspire/onboard new users,
  • inform on where and how MediaWiki is used,
  • convey and consolidate best practices,
  • initiate/foster/integrate application and development and
  • strengthen the community of stakeholders and its service portfolio.

History

The MediaWiki Users and Developers Conference began in 2024, and is the successor to two conferences: EMWCon, or the Enterprise MediaWiki Conference (2016-2023), which was held annually in North America, and SMWCon, or the Semantic MediaWiki Conference (2009-2023), which since 2016 was held annually in Europe. Both of those conferences covered MediaWiki more broadly than their name implies, and their purposes overlapped significantly, so the renaming to MediaWiki Users and Developers Conference is to some extent simply a reflection of reality.

Each conference is unique

The mission and scope of every MediaWiki Users and Developers Conference are the same, and anyone is welcome to attend.

Apart from that, each conference is a chance to enjoy a new environment with new attendees and new talks. The MediaWiki Users and Developers Conference takes place in a different city every time. The location of each conference is typically chosen by the community members who volunteer to organize the conference. The longstanding tradition is to hold the spring conference in North America and the fall conference in Europe.

In the past, key differences between each conference included:

  • Spring conference tickets are charged in U.S. dollars while fall conference tickets are charged in euros.
    • The discount categories differ between spring and fall conferences. For instance, in the early 2020s, the fall conference offered student discounts while the spring conference did not.
  • Sponsorship levels and perks vary, especially between spring and fall conferences.
  • The degree of hybrid participation and the number of remote presentations may vary considerably.
  • Organizers are typically different, with each conference chair traditionally residing in the continent where the same conference is happening.
