Carved wood puzzle box in book form

Not on view

The covers of this box are decorated in a panel-style binding. The front is carved with recessed decorations; the back cover is simply incised with a linear panel design. The spine is carved with four similar papuzzlnels, the two central panels are slightly longer than the two at the ends, each has a four-pointed star motif in the center. The part of the box that represents the text block is made of lighter hard pine, with the lines of the growth rings suggesting pages. The second panel from the top pulls out; once the section of the spine is removed the drawer jumps out. At that point the slot is blocked by the drawer side. Wood type estimates are possibly butternut (front cover and spine), cedar (back cover), hard pine (ends plus inside of spine), and whitewood (drawer interior)
