MINOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
Norfolk Tides first baseman Garrett Cooper has been named the International League Player of the Week, Minor League Baseball announced Monday.
Cooper, 33, played in five of six games for the Tides from July 1-6. He hit .421 (8 for 19) with four home runs, 10 RBIs, five runs and four walks while slashing .522/1.053/1.575. He led the league in RBIs, slugging percentage and OPS during the week while also tying for the lead in home runs.
The parent Baltimore Orioles signed Cooper to a minor league contract on June 25. He first played for the Tides on June 27.
In 2013, Milwaukee selected Cooper out of Auburn in the sixth round of the draft. He has accrued more than six years of major league service time with the Yankees, Marlins and Padres.
Worcester’s Cooper Criswell was named IL Pitcher of the Week.

Ex-UVA star falls at Wimbledon
Former University of Virginia star Danielle Collins’ longest run at Wimbledon came to an end in the round of 16 as she fell to Barbora Krejcikova of Czechia 7-5, 6-3 on Monday.
Collins, the No. 11 seed who won NCAA singles titles with the Cavaliers in 2014 and 2016, appeared to play through a leg injury and used a medical timeout in the second set.
The 30-year-old plans to retire after this year because she wants to start a family.

Woodside guard picks Radford
Woodside High guard Masiah Stevens has committed to play basketball at Radford, he announced on social media.
Stevens, a 2025 commit, helped the Wolverines win two straight Class 5 state championships.
VT’s Pry makes Dodd watch list
Virginia Tech’s Brent Pry is one of 21 college football coaches to be named to the preseason watch list for the 2024 Dodd Trophy.
The honor is considered college football’s most coveted national coaching award.
Pry was one of six ACC coaches to make the list. The others include Louisville’s Jeff Brohm, Miami’s Mario Cristobal, North Carolina State’s Dave Doeren, Florida State’s Mike Norvell and Clemson’s Dabo Swinney.
UVA’s Ford earns more accolades
University of Virginia first baseman Henry Ford has made the Baseball America and D1Baseball Freshman All-America Teams.
That gives Ford four freshman All-America honors after he received earlier nods from Perfect Game and NCBWA.
Ford broke school freshman records for home runs (17), RBIs (69) and total bases (151) this season. He also hit .336 with 13 doubles, a triple and 60 runs.
Meanwhile, East Carolina relief pitcher Ethan Norby made Baseball America’s Freshman All-America second team.
Two CNU players top all-state team
Christopher Newport’s Abby Asuncion has been named Player of the Year and teammate Alexis Morales is Defensive Player of the Year as part of the Virginia Sports Information Directors All-State Field Hockey Team.
Asuncion and Morales joined the Captains’ Katie Abendschoen and Lily Kerr on the all-state first team, while CNU’s Caroline Hughlett and Brooke Billhimer made the second team.
NSU to host Spartan Fan Fest
Norfolk State will host a Spartan Fan Fest on Aug.18 from 2-6 p.m. at Dick’s House of Sport in Chesapeake at 1501 Sentinel Drive.
The event will kick off the fall seasons for football, volleyball and cross country and include giveaways, games and poster signings. Fans will also have the opportunity to take photos with Spartans athletes.
The event is free and open to the public.
NSU will open its football season in the MEAC/SWAC Challenge against Florida A&M on Aug. 24 in Atlanta.
HOCKEY
McDougall returns to Admirals
The Norfolk Admirals have signed defenseman Josh McDougall as its first player for the 2024-25 season.
The Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, native joined the Admirals in December of 2022. He collected 10 points in 42 games that season, then posted 20 points, including 17 assists, and a plus-20 rating last season.
McDougall helped the Admirals reach the North Division Finals of the Kelly Cup Playoffs, notching six points in 12 games.
McDougall played college hockey at Mercyhurst University.
