Maidenhead United were given top billing on Sky Sports News on Saturday lunchtime after the confirmation of Max Kilman's £40m move from Wolverhampton Wanderers to West Ham United.

With the club having a sell-on fee attached to the deal which took Kilman from York Road to Molineux for £40,000 in 2018, the Sky cameras were quick to trail Magpies chairman Peter Griffin to speak with him about it ahead of Maidenhead’s pre-season friendly with Holyport at Summerleaze Park on Saturday.

Without going into details about how much the Magpies are set to bank from the sell-on clause, Griffin said that Kilman's sale - and the money Maidenhead will receive from it - has the potential to 'profoundly change the course of the club over the coming years'.

It's been widely reported that the Magpies had a 20 per cent sell on fee for the player with Wolves, however, the two Premier League clubs managed to negotiate Maidenhead down to 10 per cent in order to get the £40m deal over the line.

As such, the Magpies are set to bank around £4m from the move, still a hugely significant sum for a club of Maidenhead's size.

Whether there were any inducements for Maidenhead to negotiate that fee down remains to be seen, but Griffin told Sky Sports that 'all three clubs (West Ham, Wolves and Maidenhead) had done really well out of this'

Kilman's move from Wolves was confirmed by West Ham on Saturday morning, with the player signing a reported seven-year contract with the Hammers.

Speaking live on Sky Sports News on Saturday lunchtime, Griffin gave an indication as to how the Kilman fee will be spent and said the club will update supporters on their plans in the coming weeks.

“The figures you mention there are not quite accurate and we’re not able to go into it because it’s all under confidentiality,” Griffin said. “It’s not quite as big as that (£6-8m). But it is an amount that can profoundly change the course of the club.

“We’re a part-time team competing in the National League, but we have a huge programme. We have a women’s team and development squad for girls, we have an academy, a community scheme which we run. That is fantastic, we reach out to many, many people in the community every week. So, the money that comes in is not going to just affect the first team, it will affect the women’s team, the community work we do and the infrastructure that we have at the ground.

“So, there’s 101 things that we could do, and we’ll sit down and discuss how we can use that money for the best.

“It’s significant, it’s a really good cash injection into the club that we’re really delighted with. We’ve done well out of this. All of the clubs involved have done well out of this. Without going into any details about cash, it is significant, and it will change the course of the club over the next couple of years.

“The car park at the club, leading into the club house is more potholes than it is tarmac. We’ve already got quotes for that. We’ve got to put some new crash barriers on the terraces.

“We already had a list of work to do, but what this means is that we can probably start to accelerate that, and we can look a little bit broader as to what we do. We’re not going to rush into it and we’re going to look at how we can spend this money wisely, and how we can get the most for our money, especially with things that could make the club more money, facilities that could yield more money going forward.

“There are a lot of things to look at but it’s a really nice problem to have. In non-league football you often have to do a lot with very little.

“Now we’ve got a little more and perhaps we can do more with that, that’s the plan. It’s just really exciting to look at what we can do with this, and we’ll look forward to the next couple of weeks to plan that and following that there will be a supporters meeting so we can update them on what we’re going to spend the money on and how hopefully we can change the course of the club for years to come.”
