In 2021, the mortality rate of sepsis among infants declined further to record low levels in both urban areas of China. Developments in treatment regimes and measures enabling earlier detection were the main contributing factors to the control of the disease.
Sepsis is a systemic infection caused by bacteria or fungi that invade and multiply in the bloodstream, resulting in toxins and severe organ failures. With a weak immune system, newborns are usually more vulnerable to infections and are at higher risk of developing sepsis.
