Argentina and Messi earn another trophy

If the 2024 Copa America does prove to be Lionel Messi’s international farewell, it went to script for world champions Argentina as they added a record 16th South American title to their collection.

They edged out Colombia in the final, Lautaro Martinez scoring the only goal with eight minutes of extra time remaining to pick up the Golden Boot award after starring throughout.

Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez once again showed his prowess, conceding just once during the tournament and producing some fine penalty saves in the quarter-final win against Ecuador.

Argentina are expected to be among the favourites in two years’ time at the World Cup that will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
