WESLACO, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Mission, Nikki Rowe and PSJA Memorial high schools punched their tickets to the Texas Football 7-on-7 tournament with wins at the RGV Mid-Valley Classic.

It was the final weekend for high school programs across the state to qualify for the state tournament.

Rowe had Economedes in their way of qualifying for the state tournament for the third straight season. After a 7-6 deficit at the half, the Warriors’ offense came alive.

Junior quarterback Elijah Garza marched down the field three separate times and delivered each time his team needed him.

After a Jaguars touchdown that tied the game at 13, Garza connected with senior running back Alek Anzaldua in the endzone as time expired.

Following the emotional 19-13 win, Garza said, “We knew what they were running. They were running cover 4, so we took short, short, short, and then, that long bomb finally came at the end to our running back, Alek.”

Anzaldua added, “It feels great. I don’t really know what to say, but it just feels great. Shoutout to our defense, too. Our defense did everything. They made the stops, so we got the last chance, and we scored.”

Over at Weslaco East, Mission and PSJA Memorial also qualified for the state tournament. The Eagles defeated Mercedes, 31-27. The Wolverines beat Edinburg, 13-6.

The Texas Football 7-on-7 tournament begins June 27 and will run until June 29. All games will be held at the Veterans Park and Athletic Complex in College Station.
