Background:

TB remains among the leading infectious killers worldwide, claiming over 4000 lives a day. To accelerate action to end TB, Heads of State came together at the first-ever UN high-level meeting on TB (UNHLM) in September 2018. The meeting resulted in an action-oriented political declaration that included bold targets to close gaps in prevention and care. In 2020, the United Nations (UN) Secretary-General António Guterres released a progress report on TB that stressed high-level commitments and targets have galvanized global and national progress toward ending TB, but urgent and more ambitious investments and actions are required. Member States were urged to implement the 10 priority recommendations in the report, to put the world on track to reach agreed targets by 2022 and beyond, and to reduce the enormous human and societal toll caused by TB.

Despite progress made by countries over the past years, the COVID-19 pandemic coupled with ongoing global crises, has reversed years of progress made in the fight to end TB. For the first time in over a decade, TB deaths have increased, placing an even heavier burden on those affected.

The UN General Assembly high-level side event “Progress and multisectoral action towards achieving global targets to end TB” will build upon the outcomes of the 2018 UN High-Level Meeting on TB and progress made to date in the TB response. As Indonesia holds the 2022 G20 Presidency, a spotlight will be placed on G20 leadership on ending TB, building on the outcomes of the first G20 Health Working Group side event on TB “Call to Action on financing the TB response”. The Call to Action sought to promote adequate and sustainable financing for the TB response and TB research through multilateral, bilateral, and domestic mechanisms. A focus will also be placed on intensifying TB research and development, notably for new TB vaccines leveraging lessons from the response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
