Editorial Reviews

Review

“This is the third edition of a classic made all the more popular as we try to understand the origins of today’s Middle East with its wars, hatreds, dictatorships, genocides and infamous new caliphates that hold nothing but terror for those who will not bow the knee to jihadi dogma.” (Unrv.com, 1 January 2016)

“For these reasons and for many more, this volume deserves considerable praise and lasting admiration.” (RBECS.org, 27 December 2015)

From the Inside Flap

Incorporating the latest scholarly research in this rapidly developing field, the third edition of A History of the Ancient Near East ca. 3000–323 BC presents a comprehensive overview of the extraordinary multicultural civilizations of the ancient Near East. Presenting the region’s complex history in a concise and accessible manner, chapters begin with the emergence of writing around 3000 BC, and proceed with the origins of the first cities in Mesopotamia and growth of the Babylonian and Hittite kingdoms up to the rise of the Assyrian and Persian empires. Concluding chapters address the transformation of the ancient Near East by the conquests of Alexander the Great—with a new chapter addressing governance and continuity in the region during the Persian Empire. Other updates include a comprehensive timeline of events, 30 new illustrations, and expanded coverage of the myriad political events, military campaigns, and social and cultural developments that emerged throughout the Near East over the course of more than three millennia. Another notable update is the inclusion of Key Debate boxes designed to illuminate differing perspectives on various critical issues after each chapter. A History of the Ancient Near East ca. 3000-323 BC, Third Edition, enhances its reputation as one of the most accessible introductions to the rich and complex history of ancient Near Eastern civilizations available today.

351 pages of text (including a Preface, Author's Note, maps, non-color plate illustrations, "Boxes," "Debates," "Documents," and charts); 20 very useful maps; 3 charts; 62 illustrations (including 12 color plates); 18 "Boxes" (brief focussed discussions of a topic); 29 "Documents" (translated segments of primary source documents); 16 (one per chapter) "Debates" (discussion of differing views on a question related to the chapter material); 16 pages of king lists; 6 page "Guide to Further Reading;" "4 page Time Line;"and 15 page Bibliography. There are scatted chapter end-notes, almost all references/citations. There are box notes (contained in the text boxes) that offer clarifications or translation references. The book is a history of the Ancient Near East (defined as the eastern Mediterranean coast to central Iran and from the Black Sea to Red Sea. Egypt and Greece are only included to the extent they interact with that area. The time covered is from the late 4th Millennium BCE until Alexander's conquest. The text is organized into three section: "City-States;" "Territorial States;" and "Empires." The text explores the development of the region (largely chronologically) discussing the interactions of the polities and problems of internal stability. I found the book very illuminating and rewarding. The Preface mentions that earlier editions (and presumably this edition) are used in the classroom. Indications that this is intended to be used as a textbook are the "Boxes," "Debate," and "Document" text boxes. The "Boxes" briefly call out items or topics of interest for additional focus: "The eponym dating system" or "The Amarna letters." The "Debates" address areas ongoing disagreements:"Who were the Amorites?" or "Why cities?" "Documents present translations of sections of primary source documents: "Letters from Ugarit" or "Examples of Amarna letters." This is a very remarkable book, but, be warned, although very well written it is very dense in information and isn't a breezy beach book.

I was in the middle of Zoom class and somehow some books randomly fell off my shelf onto my cup of English breakfast tea knocking it all over my books. I tried to mop it up as best as I could but then my Prof got mad at me because I had my video off so I tried to prop the book up over the heating vent to help it to dry better. But since the pages are shiny they kinda stuck together, and I kinda ripped them when I was separating them. I gave up so some of them are stuck together. Also the rest of the pages that didn't get stuck got warped, and my brand new beautiful book doesn't look so good anymore.

But other than that the actual book itself is pretty good. It has lots of pictures and maps which are cool, although if you're not into ancient mesopotamia and the Sumerians it can be a bit dull.

Exhaustive. Best one of the ancient history books I've read to date. Clear, honest explanations that are easy to follow in a complicated historical period. I'm renting it currently- may need to extend that to get the most out of it. Worth taking notes.

This is an excellent read for those who are interested in studying and majoring in Ancient Near Eastern Studies/ Assyriology. Author Marc Van de Mieroop, knows what he's talking about, after all, he is an Assyriologist who earned his Ph.D. from Yale University, so he is up in the ranks next to Professor Irving Finkel. It is definitely a reliable, solid, and credible source with references to top ranking scholars and elite academic institutions like Oxford University.

A great and extensive introduction to the ancient near east. The writing is scholarly but not so heavy as to scare someone away.

Culture, language, geography, art, technology... There were a lot of factors involved in the formation of the earliest civilizations. This book is an informative (and interesting) introduction to the history of the near east. There is uncertainty among scholars regarding the origins of some things, like certain people groups. The author, describing his book, states in the preface that "It is A History, not The history". His other books on the individual empires of the near east are next on my reading list.
