WTVM Editorial 04/23/24: Remembering Pops Barnes

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) - Clairmont Jerome Barnes passed away on April 14th at the age of 81.

To his multitudes of friends and admirers he was better known as “Pops” Barnes, who was truly one of the most accomplished men of his generation.

We were lucky Pops called Columbus home for decades. He was a truly caring and effective leader in the military, in medicine and in politics. Most recently, he served as a Columbus City Councilman, but that was just one of the many important things he did with his life.

Pops had a distinguished military career achieving the rank of Army Master Sergeant, one of the toughest ranks for an enlisted man to attain.

Following his military career, Pops earned a nursing degree, quite an achievement on its own - especially as a student in his fifties - and the perfect second career for a man like Pops, who cared deeply for his patients. Pops had a special interest in the health and well-being of seniors and veterans.

In fact, in 2010, Pops Barnes revived the Columbus Veterans Day Parade, which had fallen by the wayside, because he felt so strongly about recognizing all who served.

Columbus was indeed fortunate to have Pops Barnes. Not just because he served on city council for 20 years, but because he gave so much positive, productive energy to our community and achieved results that made residents’ lives better.

We thank his family for sharing him with the public…and we offer our deepest condolences on his passing.

We hope that the fond memories and the strong legacy of Pops Barnes brings them light and peace.
