Ordering of IPA symbols

[edit]

I noticed that these templates use different ways of ordering the IPA consonant symbols:

  • some are row by row according to the standard IPA table
  • others are alphabetic, with special symbols arranged by likeliness to letters

Would it be better to align all to one way? And how about the vowels? I tend to go for alphabetic ordering, because these templates are meant for easy lookup by non-experts, who are not likely to recognise the logic of the IPA table ordering.

Another way to improve overview for Italian and Russian might be to split off a column in the consonant table for the doubled/palatalised symbols. That way there is more chance that the whole help page would fit on one screen.

I agree with you on alphabetic ordering. In regards to Italian, I'm wondering if the doubled entries can't be eliminated and instead a note saying that all consonants but [blank] can be doubled. As for Russian, could you show a sample of what you mean? — Ƶ§œš¹ [aɪm ˈfɻɛ̃ⁿdˡi] 10:41, 1 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I mean like this:

IPA Examples IPA Examples
Consonants
p пыль; стопа; скрип; зуб пепел
b бок; небо белого; воробей
et cetera

I have started aligning the IPA help pages. I saw that some use bolded IPA symbols. That is unusual and may hamper seeing them clearly. I propose to make them not bold, but slightly bigger than the normal font. Then the rule set could be:

  • IPA symbols centered, <big>, not bold
  • IPA symbols ordered alphabetically, slotting in special symbols with similar letters (as in help:IPA)
  • example words left aligned, not italic, rendered letters bolded
  • place footnotes only in the example column (to avoid misalignment)
  • use double column if major pairing of symbols occurs (doubles in Italian, palatilisation in Russian)
  • transparent background in outer table

Maybe Arabic, Catalan, Valencian, Chinese and German need wikilinking. Sicilian might be part of Italian item/entry. --5.43.73.144 (talk) 13:57, 25 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Equating a standard variety with the entire language would be stepping on thorny grounds and is better avoided. Especially Mandarin with Chinese. "Dialects" in Help:IPA/Italian dialects refers to varieties of the Italian language, not Italo-Dalmatian languages. Nardog (talk) 14:49, 25 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Zhuang and Kurdish are for bracketing after Chinese and Turkish, former and latter is order... --5.43.73.144 (talk) 14:00, 25 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

They are not. They don't even share a language family. Nardog (talk) 14:43, 25 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Template:IPA keysTemplate:IPA keys help-pages – Current title for template is misleading, actually wrong while transcluded in Help: namespace and as whole–check content and compare it with title-/template title vs template items/entries meaning plus content of those help pages/ 5.43.73.144 (talk) 14:06, 25 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
