Newbie Central
[edit]Are you a newcomer to Wikipedia? Here are some resources that you may find helpful:
- There's this video that explains some of the basics of how Wikipedia works. It's aimed more towards readers than editors, but it can give a decent foundation of some things to be aware of before you start editing. This video by an experienced Wikipedian provides more substantial advice.
- The Wikipedia Adventure. This is a very basic (and somewhat eccentric) editing tutorial.
- Do you have a conflict-of-interest? Read this guide. It's also important to be aware of an ongoing scam.
- Category:All stub articles which is organized alphabetically and by topic. All these articles could be expanded!
- This is a tutorial for what to know if you wanted to create an article. Our guideline on what is notable for inclusion on the site is a crucial part of this process.
- Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Words to watch – advice on phrasing to avoid when editing
- This page is a glossary of different terms used on Wikipedia that can help you understand what people are talking about if you come across an unfamiliar acronym.
- Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Directory – this is a list of wikiprojects. Some are way more active than others but it's a decent way to try and find groups of articles that match your interests. I'm particularly fond of Wikipedia:WikiProject Canada and the associated challenge for improving articles.
- This is the perennial sources list, which can be helpful if you're not sure if something is a reliable source. If it's not on this list and you have concerns, try this noticeboard.
- The Wikipedia Library – this cannot be used until you have 6 months tenure, no active blocks, and 500 edits. However, once you meet the criteria, it is a very useful resource. There is also the Wikipedia:Resource Exchange. I have subscriptions to the Globe and Mail, Toronto Star, and Niagara Falls Review, if you ever want me to verify something for you. I also have access to the James A. Gibson library at Brock University.
Question from Tarnika Hazra (11:06, 7 July 2024)
[edit]Hello Mam,
I am new here. Please let me know if I want to add any new things to Wikipedia then what should I do? --Tarnika Hazra (talk) 11:06, 7 July 2024 (UTC)
- @Tarnika Hazra: Depends on what you want to do. I have some resources listed at the top of this page you might find helpful. Let me know if you're looking for more specific advice. Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 11:14, 7 July 2024 (UTC)

Question from Kemifreund (15:47, 7 July 2024)
[edit]Hi, I'm editing "Katharine Blunt" and have found several more of her scientific publications. Should I add them? - Thanks --Kemifreund (talk) 15:47, 7 July 2024 (UTC)
- Hi Kemifreund. Feel free to be bold! If you think you can improve Katharine Blunt, go for it. If someone reverts you, you can discuss it with them. Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 17:09, 7 July 2024 (UTC)
Editwarring, repeated copyright violations/BLP violations
[edit]I need some help over at Wikipedia:Administrators'_noticeboard/Incidents#84.206.11.96. Would you be so kind to take a look? Thanks in advance, Polygnotus (talk) 13:19, 8 July 2024 (UTC)
- @Polygnotus: I reverted to the last stable version but I'm hesitant to do more. I've commented at the thread you linked. I'm alright with other admins taking further action if they think that's what's best. Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 14:43, 8 July 2024 (UTC)
- I clearly outlined my arguments, I added at least five different sources for the content you removed. Where it was necessary, I quoted reliable sources. You just deleted things, because you could. You did not went into details etc. So my question is somple, if I found seven sources which underpin what I wrote, can I insert it into text, as I pointed out on the talk page at least five times, or is she a noli me tangere? 84.225.152.139 (talk) 14:49, 8 July 2024 (UTC)
- What you should do is paraphrase the content in your own words instead of just quoting everything. You should also use Talk:Ilaria Salis to propose these changes because you cannot edit war to get your way. Disputed changes need to be discussed on the talk page so editors can come to a consensus. Do you understand what I mean by this? Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 14:54, 8 July 2024 (UTC)
- Lets have a look at the at the Talk Page. I found 7 different sources that prove that she owes money. Polygnomy deleted what I wrote, namely she owes money. No explanation. So it is ok, according to you? 84.225.152.139 (talk) 15:05, 8 July 2024 (UTC)
- You know that my name is not "Polygnomy". I have provided a lot of information about the problems with the edits you made. You were unwilling to collaborate. If you continue you will be blocked. You should probably move on. Polygnotus (talk) 15:23, 8 July 2024 (UTC)

- The fact that there are several IPs from a wide range, and they all banging on about this one article, convinces me that this is a NOTHERE contributor trying to use Wikipedia to attack a person. That is disruptive. I will start blocking each IP that pops up for a significant period. My recommendation is that people stop commenting here. Instead, ping me if the IP surfaces with the same belligerence and I will block each IP for at least a month. Johnuniq (talk) 00:37, 10 July 2024 (UTC)

[edit]Thanks for participating in the June 2024 backlog drive!
You scored 101 points while adding citations to articles during WikiProject Reliability's first {{citation needed}} backlog drive, earning you this cleanup barnstar. Thanks for helping out! |
Pichpich (talk) 22:00, 8 July 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks Pichpich. It was a fun backlog drive, I hope to see more like it. :) Maybe something to do with Category:All unreferenced BLPs, Category:BLP articles lacking sources, or some generic improve BLPs drive? I organized some of these articles in my sandbox once upon a time and came across a G10 from years ago. Actually maybe I should organize something like this since I care so much. Do you have any advice for trying to do that? I've never really organized any sort of backlog drive before. Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 22:26, 8 July 2024 (UTC)
- It was my first participation in a backlog drive of this type and I also found it quite interesting. I realized that if you restrict the category by topic, you get the high-traffic articles first, which is nice because it feels more productive to clean up an important BLP rather than an obscure, borderline deletable one. Cheers, Pichpich (talk) 15:36, 9 July 2024 (UTC)
- @Pichpich: I'm glad you had fun with this too. :) Do you know anyone else that was involved in organizing this backlog drive that might be able to give me good advice about organizing my own? It's okay if you don't, I just figured it doesn't hurt to ask. Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 15:46, 9 July 2024 (UTC)
- My involvement in the drive is minimal: I'm just handing out barnstars. I think Cremastra (talk · contribs) was the organizer for this drive, and you can always post on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Reliability which seems to be watched by a few editors. Cheers, Pichpich (talk) 15:52, 9 July 2024 (UTC)
- Plan well in advance, get someone to help you, and as I learned, be very precise with the rules and scoring. Overprecise, even. It saves time and confusion in the long run. Cremastra (talk) 20:58, 9 July 2024 (UTC)

Hey Levivich you commented on my sandbox when I organized this stuff the last time. Any chance you have any advice for a larger scale version of this? [3] Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 16:07, 9 July 2024 (UTC)
- I distinctly remember somebody else asking me about this recently -- like in 2024, I think -- but now I can't remember who or where. But I remember pointing them to the stuff we were doing last year. In terms of larger scale version, I think the thing to do is resurrect WP:UBLPR, and get everyone interested in working on this to watchlist that talk page, and coordinate from there. I think the person I was talking to about this earlier this year was interested in methods for identifying unreferenced BLPs and unreferenced articles generally, but UBLPR seems like the natural place to coordinate such efforts. Levivich (talk) 16:17, 9 July 2024 (UTC)
- @Levivich: Okay, thanks! That does seem like a good place to coordinate future efforts. Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 16:30, 9 July 2024 (UTC)

Question from Nyavalcade (13:56, 11 July 2024)
[edit]Hi Clovermoss, sorry for the early morning notification on the talk page! I'm not exactly a new editor, but this is the first time I've undertaken edits like this, so - as Wikipedia's assigned you as my mentor - I'd just like to pass by my first two or so main space edits to you to see if there's anything I could have done better in the process of editing these articles.

Clarification request closed
[edit]The Noleander clarification request that you initiated has been closed and archived. The request was related to that case's principle 9, which states:
Editors are expected to refrain from making unnecessary references to the actual or perceived racial, religious, or ethnic background of fellow editors. Such references should be made only if they clearly serve a legitimate purpose. In the context of a noticeboard discussion or dispute resolution, it will rarely serve a valid purpose to seek to classify the participants in the discussion on this basis.
Among the participating Arbitrators, there was a rough consensus that this principle remains true with current policies and guidelines and that there is not an exemption from this principle for asserting that an editor has a conflict of interest. Thank you for your work at DYK and going the extra mile to maintain the quality of hooks. Also for being considerate and trying to prevent any delays. I found it impressive. NØ 21:50, 12 July 2024 (UTC) |
- Thanks MaranoFan. I appreciate that you've been a good sport in regards to my concerns. I haven't delved much into DYK yet but I hope to get more involved with the process eventually. :) Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 21:54, 12 July 2024 (UTC)
- I was actually thinking of saying something about your impressive work at DYK but then I wanted to wait at least a few days only for someone to beat me to it! I never thought you would be joining DYK to promote a prep to a queue (which only admins can do). I only joined DYK 4 months ago to get cozy game (and funny enough, Animal Crossing: New Horizons to the home page. I never expected myself to review and even to promote a DYK to prep, especially when I am not at 5 or more nominations. Speaking of which, the A9 dualling project was my best article yet and got that to DYK with plans to get it to GA!
- Also, I will look into contributing to your editor reflections page tomorrow since its 11pm for me. JuniperChill (talk) 22:29, 12 July 2024 (UTC)
- Technically I have some previous experience (see here) with DYK. But it's definitely different trying to promote a queue vs writing three/four DYK noms. 😅 Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 22:33, 12 July 2024 (UTC)
- And that I have been reviewing DYK articles (I actually have a DYK work page) more than I can nominate them. And I see you have started a DYK nom on no kid zone. JuniperChill (talk) 22:51, 12 July 2024 (UTC)
- Also Clover Point! I've done 2 of my 4 DYK noms within the past week. :) Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 22:53, 12 July 2024 (UTC)

Requesting rights to edit a page name and to insert images
[edit]Dear Clovermoss,
I hope you are well. I would like to make some changes to the Wikipedia page 'Lala Rukh (Activist)'. I work at the Estate of Lala Rukh to manage the late artist and activist's archives. our goal is to make information on her more accessible. I have edited the text on the already existing page 'Lala Rukh (Activist)'. I would like to correct the title of the page to either just Lala Rukh or to Lala Rukh (Artist and Activist) as that is more accurate. Along with that, I also want to include pictures from her archives in her biography, which I am unable to do currently. If you could grant me more editor rights or administrative rights, I would like to make these necessary changes.
Thank You,
Estateoflalarukh Estateoflalarukh (talk) 13:13, 13 July 2024 (UTC)
- Hi Estateoflalarukh. My first suggestion is for you to read this page, it explains best practices for editors who have a conflict of interest, such as yourself. If you are sharing this account with other people, please stop doing so and create your own individual accounts.
- Lala Rukh (activist) is under that title because Wikipedia has specific naming conventions for titles of articles. Wikipedia:Disambiguation explains how that works. While it's true she may have been an activist and artist, the parentheses do not need to mention that. For another example of this, see Katherine Hughes (activist). "Editing rights" is a bit of a misnomer, as the average person can edit pages with rare exceptions. Since you have a conflict of interest, best practice would be for you to make suggestions on Talk:Lala Rukh (activist) instead of editing the page directly. This page explains how to do that. I cannot grant you administrative rights because that process is a result of Wikipedia:Requests for adminship and involves editors with thousands of edits and months of experience editing the project. Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 13:29, 13 July 2024 (UTC)
- To upload an image, I suggest you go through the process described here. Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 13:31, 13 July 2024 (UTC)

Hi -
Need to change the image details for an image I uploaded. It was box art for a video game (which I'm pretty sure were approved by wiki for upload) but I put it in as my own work, which it wasn't. I wasn't reading things before I completed the upload. Anyway to fix this or will wiki just delete it on their own when they see it was uploaded incorrectly? Thanks. --Wjamcd81 (talk) 19:59, 13 July 2024 (UTC)
- Hi, Wjamcd81. Thanks for letting me know. Since you incorrectly indicated it was your own work, the file was uploaded to our sister project, Wikimedia Commons. It will likely get deleted there sometime in the near future. I'd encourage you to try to upload the file again while following this page and clicking the "upload a non-free file" box here. It looks like you're using the file for Monster Strike so you shouldn't have any issues. Let me know if you have further questions! Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 21:43, 13 July 2024 (UTC)
