In 1944 the German army officer Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg attempted to assassinate Adolf Hitler at the Wolf’s Lair” military headquarters during the Second World War. Hitler was slightly wounded by a briefcase bomb. Stauffenberg was executed by firing squad the next day, aged 36. Nature notes
When the sun came out, the brimming Liverpool dock was seen to be full of water weed. It was spiked water-milfoil and in the bright light the submerged feathery fronds shone an emerald green. Like all native aquatic weeds, the presence of spiked water-milfoil is not only highly attractive, but reassuring: it fosters biodiversity and helps reduce pollution. Rooted on the bed of slow moving water such as canals, lakes, sluggish rivers, ditches, ponds and even docks, the plant can grow up to 3m long. Its tiny red flowers grow on the small spikes that lift a few centimetres above the surface. The water in this particular Liverpool dock is slightly salty. Spiked water-milfoil can survive in such brackish environments. Jonathan Tulloch
