Mstyslav Chernov’s doc is nominated in two categories, for Best Documentary and Best Film not in the English Language. Other nominees in the Best Doc category are American Symphony, Beyond Utopia, Still: A Michael J Fox Movie and Wham!. The 2024 Baftas will take place on 18 February at London's Southbank Centre.

A March On Rome added to European Film Awards Documentary Shortlist 2022

Following the Aug 30 announcement of the 13-film European Documentary shortlist for the European Film Awards, Mark Cousins’ A March On Rome has been added. Five feature films have also been added in the Feature Film category. After the upcoming two-stage nomination and voting process undertaken by the 4,400 Academy members, the winners will be announced at the Awards in Reykjavík on December 10.

Doclisboa Arché and Nebulae awards announced

The winners of Doclisboa’s Arché and Nebulae pitch awards were announced October 22. For its ninth edition, Arché gathered film projects from 10 countries around the globe, including Brazil, Argentina and Colombia. The eight Nebulae Award competitors were all produced or co-produced in Finland, the guest country for this edition.

Hot Docs unveils 2024 selection against turbulent backdrop

24 hours after 10 Hot Docs programmers exited the festival en masse, the Canadian doc fest unveiled its selection of 168 documentaries representing 64 countries, featuring 51 world and 32 international premieres. The 2024 festival will open April 25 with the international premiere of Luther: Never Too Much, directed by award-winning filmmaker Dawn Porter. Hot Docs 2024 runs April 25 to May 5, promising “an unparalleled celebration of non-fiction storytelling on a global scale.”

Docu Rough Cut Boutique announces selection for 2023 edition

Five new doc projects have been selected for the 13th edition of Docu Rough Cut Boutique. Created by the Sarajevo Film Festival and Balkan Doc Center, the programme is organized in three working modules: Sofia (first week of April 2023), Budapest (June 2023) and Sarajevo (August 2023). “The selection process was one of the hardest in these last thirteen years of the program,” write organisers.

Polish Docs PRO returns to Sunny Side in 2023 with a delegation of 5 producers representing nine projects. These include profiles of two giants of Polish cinema, the controversial Roman Polański and the maverick Andrzej Wajda, and four projects from production company Kijora. “Polish producers are very professional and well prepared for the international co-productions, which makes them very good partners," underlines KFF Sales & Promotion MD Barbara Orlicz-Szczypuła.

Sabaya filmmakers reject non-consent claims

Swedish producer Antonio Russo Merenda issues rebuttal to New York Times article which states that many of the traumatized women in the award-winning feature documentary Sabaya said they never agreed to be in the film. The film portrays the rescue of Yazidi women, abducted by ISIS for exploitation as sex slaves, from the al-Hol Camp in Syria.

Programme of the 6th AJB DOC Film Festival announced

Organisers of the 6th Al Jazeera Balkans International Documentary Film Festival (AJB DOC, 8-12 September, Sarajevo) unveiled August 28 this year’s 24-film official selection. Thirteen films play in Competition programme, including the highly lauded My Name is Happy by Nick Read and Ayse Toprak, and When Spring Came to Bucha by Mila Teshaieva and Marcus Lenz. The overall selection presents six world, one international, 12 regional and five Bosnian and Herzegovinian premieres.
