It’s World Autism Day and Autism Acceptance/Awareness Month. ❤️ Today I’m taking time to reflect on some of the things I have learned and unlearned over the years as a feeding therapist while supporting autistic kids and their families. These kids and their parents have taught me so many invaluable lessons…here are just a few: 1. There is no one-size-fits all feeding approach for autistic kids and their families. 2. The family should be at the heart of any treatment. They are the experts on their child. 3. If we are accepting of neurodiversity, then we need to consider being accepting of neurodivergent eating. We don’t all see the world through the same lens and we don’t all have to eat the same way. 4. Neurodivergent kids often need accommodations to feel safe and regulated at mealtimes. That means they may not be able to tolerate joining the family meal, that they may benefit from a screen at mealtimes, and that they may only be able eat their “safe foods.” 5. It’s not our job to get kids to eat new foods. Our role is to create a nurturing and supportive environment to foster positive relationships with food. ❤️ #autism #autismacceptance #worldautismawarenessday #autismacceptancemonth #neurodivergent #neurodiversity

Here’s my new blog about how to use fun Food Science activities to help anxious eaters learn about new foods. Research shows that when kids are pressured to eat they become anxious, lose their appetite, and are less likely to accept foods. Kids learn to eat new foods when we create a space where they feel calm, regulated, and respected…where fun, learning, and exploration is encouraged. #arfid #autismawareness #feedingtherapy #slp #sensory

When a child has feeding difficulties like extreme picky eating, feeding delays, or food aversion, holiday meals and celebrations can be extremely stressful and overwhelming for both the child and caregivers. Parents often worry their child won't eat and that friends/family will introduce mealtime pressure. They feel judged. Kids are often on sensory overload and can't cope with eating in an unfamiliar environment. They feel anxious. Here's my latest blog with 10-Tips to help parents and 10-Tips for those hosting kids with feeding challenges. Keep calm and merry on. #feeding #feedingtherapy #feedingkids #speechlanguagepathology #autism #sensoryprocessingdisorder #developmentaldisabilities #parentingtips

Did you know that kids with #autism are five time more likely to have feeding challenges? I invite you to read my latest blog about feeding kids with #autismspectrumdisorder. Over the course of my career, I have witnessed an inspiring shift - society is moving toward embracing and celebrating #neurodiversity. Perhaps we need to consider improved acceptance of neurodivergent eating? I believe that every feeding intervention for kids with autism should be comprehensive and involve a screening for oral-motor, sensory processing, and medical/gastrointestinal issues. If a child is demonstrating challenging feeding behaviours, it shouldn't be assumed that the feeding issue is "behavioural." Behaviour is a form of communication. These kids are telling us something and we need to listen. #neurodiversity #autism #autismacceptance #feedingtherapy #slp
