About us
Eating Disorder Therapy LA is a multidisciplinary specialized outpatient eating disorder practice in the heart of Los Angeles. Under the direction of Lauren Muhlheim, Psy.D., Clinical Psychologist and Certified Eating Disorder Specialist, we offer a range of coordinated services, including psychotherapy, nutrition counseling, and yoga and movement, all in one convenient location. Our specialty is in the provision of evidence-based treatment for adolescents and adults with eating disorders including Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, Binge Eating Disorder, and Other Specified Eating Disorder (OSFED; formerly known as EDNOS or Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified). We also treat anxiety and depression. We are committed to the treatment of eating disorders in people of all ages, genders, and ethnicities. We provide state-of-the-art empirically validated treatments including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Maudsley Family Based Treatment (FBT). Dr. Muhlheim is the only FBT-certified therapist in Los Angeles County. We also provide CBT psychotherapy for anxiety, depression, body image, and similar issues. Eating disorders are complicated and dangerous illnesses. Our clients benefit from our team approach and our clinicians frequently collaborate with other professionals including internists, pediatricians, and psychiatrists. We offer services as a team or individually. Clients of our team practice benefit from our integrated approach for eating disorders and we tailor treatment to each client or family. Our clients who have already retained a dietitian or therapist and are seeking to add one member to their treatment team can also benefit from our expertise. We believe that families do not cause eating disorders, but CAN play an essential part in recovery. We work to provide support for family members who are providing care for their loved ones in recovery.

Some parents may notice new or returned behaviors in their college students when they return "Home for the Holidays: Does Your College Student Have an Eating Disorder?" Could Your College Student Have an Eating Disorder? The return home for the holidays after the first semester at college is often the first time you’ve spent significant time with your young adult since they moved away. Maybe your college student looks a little thinner to you. Or maybe they are not eating the foods they used to eat before they left for college. Or maybe they have a newfound interest in working out. Might this be a symptom of a new (or the return of an old) eating disorder? Or might it just be new healthy habits? The distinction can be difficult. Eating disorders can often mask as healthy behaviors and fly under the radar screen. So read on to learn what to look for and what to do if you suspect an eating disorder has taken hold of your college student. https://lnkd.in/gzat5EVh

New on the EDTLA blog: How Much Food To Feed (in FBT)? In Family-Based Treatment (FBT), we charge families with nourishing their teens back to health through meals at home. Because FBT is a parent empowerment model, parents are often given little specific guidance about how to do this. If you are like other families with whom I’ve worked, now that you understand this important point, you are likely wondering, “How much should I feed?” The answers are usually: Way more than you think!… And As much as you can! We are so warped by diet culture that many parents are unaware of the high caloric needs of healthy teens, and even less aware of the even higher needs of teens who need to restore significant weight and may be hypermetabolic. https://lnkd.in/gMxSEgGM

Managing Holiday Meals with an Eating Disorder The holidays are something we should all look forward to and enjoy, but they can be fraught for people with eating disorders. The combination of festive large meals and large gatherings of people who may not be your family of choice, as well as people you have not seen in a while, can be challenging for many people—and can be especially hard for those recovering from an eating disorder. When you eat in contexts different from the ones in which you eat on a daily basis, you naturally face a higher level of challenge. With appropriate pre-planning, it can usually be better managed. I always suggest having a plan for each upcoming situation. Think through who will be there, what the food environment will be, and how you can best manage it. Try to anticipate how you will navigate the various food situations and the different social challenges. Identify supports ahead of time if you can. Have a plan for navigating diet and body talk. Breathe. Hopefully, the following suggestions will help you come up with your plan.

Paying for Eating Disorder Treatment How Can I Afford Eating Disorder Therapy? When seeking treatment for an eating disorder, two of the first questions that often arise are: “How much will treatment cost?” and “How will I pay for treatment?” The answers to these seemingly simple questions depend on a great many variables. Eating disorders are complex illnesses that present with a number of psychiatric, medical and nutritional issues. Treatment needs will vary based on the severity of these various factors. Patients often require coordinated care from several healthcare professionals. Treatment for eating disorders can often be very expensive. Given this reality, it is not surprising that the vast majority of people in the US with eating disorders do not receive any treatment at all. Yet, a better understanding of the options as well as how to advocate for yourself or your family member with an eating disorder can help you access help.
